Life inside the Caliphate ain't all sunshine and rainbows. - 'Dissent in the Islamic State'.

Life inside the Caliphate ain't all sunshine and rainbows. - 'Dissent in the Islamic State'. (ctc.usma.edu). HT :Tracterrorism.

No one can reasonably expect any jihadist organization to be a total monolith in outlook among members, and the Islamic State is no exception. The idea of dissent in the Islamic State is foremost associated with the issue of takfir (declaring people to be non-Muslims, even those who self-identify as Muslim). Indeed, the group’s application of this idea has been publicized both in propaganda as well as in leaked material. However, the Islamic State’s championing of takfir is not without its criticisms.

Some critics are extreme, even going so far as to proclaim takfir on Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Others are less virulent in their response and are reluctant to fight people they see as fellow Sunni Muslims, especially other jihadis in groups like Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra). This reluctance to fight flows in part from their hesitancy to accept the doctrine of takfir as espoused by the Islamic State. Read the full story here.

Talks on prospects for Israeli gas export to Europe.

Talks on prospects for Israeli gas export to Europe. (taz).

It's not going to be easy for Israel to break into any of the gas markets in regions surrounding it, Jim Krane, Middle East energy analyst, Rice University's Baker Institute, Houston, told Trend Oct.31.

The development of Leviathan and further expansion of Tamar gas field were put on hold by the principal license holder, Noble Energy of Houston, after the Israeli antitrust commissioner backed out of a deal under which Noble and its Israeli partner, Delek company, would sell off their interests in smaller undeveloped fields to avoid being labeled monopolists.

“In the meantime, Egypt has seized the initiative with its own mega-field,” said Krane. “Egypt's big discovery last year of the Zohr field has undermined Israeli hopes for exports to Egypt or use of spare Egyptian liquefaction capacity.”

Zohr field also reduces Israeli prospects for "gas diplomacy" with its gas-short neighbors, according to Krane.

Earlier, senior officials from Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Israel agreed to advance talks on a pipeline from Israel to Europe after an EU-sponsored study showed the project would be very feasible.

The study showed the pipeline, which would traverse Cyprus and Greece before reaching Italy, would cost about 5 billion euros ($5.5 billion). Read  the full story here, more here and Here.

It's three years since the kidnapping of Msgr. Yohanna Ibrahim and Msgr. Boulos Yaziji in Aleppo, in northern Syria.

In December 2015, reports emerged about their execution.

According to preliminary data, Syrian bishops abducted in the vicinity of the country's northern city of Aleppo in 2013 are alive and currently in the city of Raqqa occupied by the Daesh militant group, a mother superior at the Monastery and Convent of Saint James the Mutilated, located in the western Syrian town of Qarah, said Wednesday.

"We have received information from our sources that they are in Raqqa, and we are concerned over their lives. We are praying for their liberation before the final attack on Raqqa," Mother Agnes Mariam Salib said at a press conference.

She added that numerous Christian community members were also praying for the liberation of the two bishops. Hmmm.......Let's hope it's not false rumors and both stay safe. Read the full story here.

'The war on Christianity' - 743 Christians Attacked by Muslims in German Refugee Camps in 2016.

'The war on Christianity' - 743 Christians Attacked by Muslims in German Refugee Camps. (Voiceofthepercecuted).

As Voice of the Persecuted has reported in the past, Christians fleeing violence are persecuted in Europe’s refugee centers.

(CBN) A new report from a coalition of Christians groups in Germany has found that 743 Christians and 10 Yezidis were victims of religiously motivated attacks in refugee camps so far this year.

The report comes from Open Doors Germany, AVC (Action on Behalf of Persecuted Christians and the Needy), IGFM (International Society for Human Rights), Aid to the Church in Need, and ZOCD (Central Council of Oriental Christians in Germany).

“The situation of Christian refugees in German refugee shelters is still unbearable. As a minority they are discriminated against, beaten up by and receive death threats from Muslim refugees and partly by the Muslim staff (security, interpreters, volunteers) on grounds of their religion,” the report says.

The Christian groups believe attacks on Christians are even more widespread than the number of reported incidents.

They call the survey, “the tip of the iceberg in regard to the number of religiously motivated attacks on Christian refugees and other religious minorities.”

It must be assumed that there is a high number of unreported cases,” they conclude. “Effective measures for the protection of religious minorities (in refugee camps have) yet to be implemented.”

Obama 'Admin' Spends $3.6 Billion to Give $70 Billion in food stamp Benefits.

Obama 'Admin' Spends $3.6 Billion to Give $70 Billion in food stamp Benefits. HT :JudicialWatch.

Not only does the government spend a breathtaking $70 billion a year to give a record number of people food stamps, it wastes billions more to administer the bloated welfare program.

Some states spend a lot more than others to distribute the free food vouchers and the discrepancies are downright outrageous.

The government dedicates $3.6 billion annually just to administer food stamps (renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—SNAP to eliminate stigma), according to a federal audit that includes mind-boggling figures.

For instance, California, the state with by far the largest food-stamp roll, spends a lot more than the national average to execute the federal nutrition program. Hmmm.....I wondered a long time what Canadian PM Trudeau meant with 'Growing the economy from the heart' ...i think i finally figured it out. Read the full story here.

Iranian Justice Minister Calls for Revision of efficiency of Death Penalty.

Iranian Justice Minister Calls for Revision of efficiency of Death Penalty. (IFPnews).

According to a report by ICANA, as translated by IFP, Iranian Justice Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi said that death penalty can’t be removed, because there are corrupt people inside the country who can’t be corrected with any other type of punishment.

Therefore, he added, capital punishment should not be rejected given the Islamic law and numerous experiences of other countries.

However, Pour-Mohammadi noted, this type of punishment has not been effective in recent years, and should be revised.

The view is also accepted by the Iranian Judiciary, he said, adding that Judiciary officials are now looking for ways to punish criminals in the best and most effective way possible.

Capital punishment will remain on the Iranian Judiciary’s agenda, but it won’t be implemented as much as it is now.

The Justice Minister’s remarks came one month after 150 lawmakers signed a motion to stop execution of minor drug traffickers.

'Healing' Substance Discovered in Remote Iranian Cave.

'Healing' Substance Discovered in Remote Iranian Cave. (IFPnews).

According to a report by IRNA, as translated by IFP, Mousa Dehghannezhad, head of the Environment Department of Saravan in southeastern Iran, announced that his team has found a substance called Mummia in a remote cave.

Dehghannezhad said “we discovered a cave with an entrance as high as two metres and as wide as 70cm. Inside the cave was 8 metres high and one metre wide.”

He noted that right from the beginning they noticed a strong smell in the cave. After further investigations, it came out to be from a substance named Mummia.

All over the place, from ceiling to the walls, was covered with this miraculous substance,” Dehghannezhad stressed.

He went on to say, “Mummia is often found in remote, inaccessible areas; it oozes out from the fractures inside the caves where sunlight never reaches.”

Dehghannezhad added that the cave is located in the north of Kalehgan County in zero point border area.

Mummia is a blackish brown substance that leaks out spontaneously from the cracks and fractures found in the vicinity of underground oil reserves and high mountains.

It has many health benefits such as healing bone fractures, treatment of stomach ulcers, bruises and tendons, joint pain, cardiovascular disease and sexual dysfunction.

Animals, too, make use of this substance to heal injuries on their bodies.

Kalehgan County which is located 347 km southeast of Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, is bordered with Pakistan.

Hmmm....After a short search i managed to find a book mentioning this 'Mummia' (See below).
I wouldn't be to eager to rub it on my body, still some tar products have a healing quality for example for psoriasis patients...... so let's keep an open mind.

Islamist leader of Turkey Erdogan declares death penalty will soon be reinstated.

Islamist leader of Turkey Erdogan declares death penalty will soon be reinstated....My note: 'As Sharia dictates'. (TurkishMinute).

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Saturday that legislation to reinstate capital punishment, which was abolished in 2004, will soon be taken to Parliament by the Justice And Development Party (AKP).

It is soon. … Don’t worry. … It is soon, God willing. … Our government [AKP] will bring it to Parliament. I believe that it will be approved by the legislature. When it comes to me, I will approve it,” said Erdoğan after a group of people chanted “We want the death penalty” during a ceremony in Ankara on Saturday.

Asking why he would approve it, Erdoğan said: “Because what the nation wants will happen. Does not sovereignty, without any condition or reservation, belong to the nation? Yes it does. … Then the issue has been solved.”

The West says this and that. … Sorry… What is important is not what the West says but my nation,” added Erdoğan, in reaction to criticism from the US and the European Union (EU). Read the full story here.

Flashback to November 2012:
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s recent remarks on a possible reintroduction of capital punishment have triggered an outcry in the European Union, a leading advocate for its abolition.
Erdogan, famous for his provocative talk, triggered controversy earlier this month when he suggested the death penalty might be brought back due to popular support for the measure, particularly in terror-related cases.
The state cannot forgive a murderer, only the victim's family can, he said, supporting a stance defended by Islam. “Thank God almighty, I am a servant of sharia.” It was 1994, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan was proud to proclaim his Islamist roots in his native Istanbul, where he served as the mayor – or, as he customarily described himself, the city’s “imam.”

Hmmm.....Under Islamic Human rights (CairoDeclaration) all rights are subject to Shariah law, death penalty is no problem.

Video - Jesus’ tomb after centuries finally opened in Jerusalem.

Jesus’ tomb after centuries finally opened in Jerusalem. (NationalGeographic).

For the first time in centuries, scientists have exposed the original surface of what is traditionally considered the tomb of Jesus Christ. Located in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem, the tomb has been covered by marble cladding since at least 1555 A.D., and most likely centuries earlier.

"The marble covering of the tomb has been pulled back, and we were surprised by the amount of fill material beneath it,” said Fredrik Hiebert, archaeologist-in-residence at the National Geographic Society, a partner in the restoration project.
“It will be a long scientific analysis, but we will finally be able to see the original rock surface on which, according to tradition, the body of Christ was laid."

According to Christian tradition, the body of Jesus Christ was laid on a shelf or “burial bed” hewn from the side of a limestone cave following his crucifixion by the Romans in A.D. 30 or possibly 33. Christian belief says Christ was resurrected after death, and women who came to anoint his body three days after the burial reported that no remains were present.

The marble slab that covers the holy bench—roughly 3 by 5 feet and carved from creamy marble—had been pulled away from the wall. Beneath it was a grey-beige stone surface. What is it? a conservator was asked. "We don’t know yet," she replied. "It's time to bring in the scientific monitoring tools."

Outside the Edicule, Thephilos III, the Greek Patriarch of Jerusalem, stood watching the events with a serene smile. "I'm glad that the atmosphere is special, there is a hidden joy," said the patriarch.

"Here we have Franciscans, Armenians, Greeks, Muslim guards, and Jewish police officers. We hope and we pray that this will be a real message that the impossible can become the possible. We all need peace and mutual respect." Read the full story here.

Canada - Mosquito Surveillance Reveals the Aedes aegypti Species in Southern Ontario.

We need a new Map.

Canada - Mosquito Surveillance Reveals the Aedes aegypti Species in Southern Ontario. (Wechu). HT: Crof.

In the United States, the Aedes aegypti mosquito primarily exists in the southern states and along the eastern seaboard, where temperatures are more favourable for its survival. There are records of this mosquito being found in some northern states, including Michigan and New Hampshire; however, these were only temporary summer incursions, as the relatively cold winters prevented establishment. To our knowledge, this is the first time Aedes aegypti has been collected in Canada.
Although it is unknown exactly how the larvae arrived in Ontario, one possibility is that the eggs were transported from the U.S. in shipping containers or other cross-border vehicle traffic. Aedes aegypti eggs could also have been imported in recycled products, such as tires or other containers. Given that this is a tropical mosquito, the extremely hot temperatures this past summer allowed for the species to exist in Windsor.
“We will continue to ensure that our community stays informed about infectious diseases and the local mosquito surveillance program. It is a key public health service that we provide to Windsor-Essex County residents. The discovery of the yellow fever mosquito larvae through enhanced surveillance of the Aedes albopictus mosquito is an important reminder that we should continue to protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites,” said Dr. Kirk.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito is even less cold tolerant than the Aedes albopictus and will not survive the cold winter temperatures. For Zika virus transmission to occur, the Aedes aegypti mosquito would need to feed on an infected person, within the first several days of infection, and then feed upon another susceptible person.

The greatest risk to contracting Zika virus continues to be centered on those who have travelled to Zika-risk areas (such as South America, the Caribbean and Florida) or who are or have been in sexual contact with these travelers. Read the full story here. More on this story here.

Russia: Obama 'Admin' Includes 10 Syrian Rebel Groups Working With Terrorists in Truce List.

Moscow: US Includes 10 Syrian Rebel Groups Working With Terrorists in Truce List. (SP).

Washington included two Syrian rebel groups working with Daesh and eight groups working with al-Nusra Front in a truce list, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations' Geneva office said in a statement.

"Washington included two [Syrian rebel] groups that fight together with Daesh and 8 with al-Nusra Front in the list of the participants of the ceasefire regime in Syria sent to the Russian side. Moreover the inclusion of Ahrar ash-Sham and Nour al-Din al-Zenki cutthroats in this list completely discredites the American list," the mission said in a statement published by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Moscow added that "it seems that the United States have not received any written obligations to respect the ceasefire from groups it controls."

On Friday, Moscow has unveiled a "Comparative Analysis of Russia-US Agreements Implementation" on Syria and sent it to the a range of other agencies in addition to the UN.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said earlier that Moscow will present a report in the United Nations Security Council on Russia's implementation of agreements with the US on Syria and on Washington's failure to abide by them to avoid speculations on the issue. Iran Raps 'Rare' EU Clauses in Trade Deals which cover snap back sanctions and new sanctions.

Iran Raps 'Rare' EU Clauses in Trade Deals which cover snap back sanctions and new sanctions. (IFPnews).

Asghar Fakhrieh Kashan, Iran’s deputy minister of roads and urban development, told the Financial Times that European government should prevent the inclusion of what he described as “very exceptional terms and conditions” in trade agreements with Iran.

Fakhrieh Kashan warned that such terms and conditions were effectively discouraging investments in the Iranian economy.
He said export credit agencies were specifically demanding premiums on insurance that made banks insist on putting what he described as “unacceptable terms” in contracts related to “political risk” in doing business with Iran.
Fakhrieh Kashan emphasized that Iran will not accept any clauses in trade agreements which he said foresee such possibilities like snapback sanctions and new sanctions against Iran.

European businesses, he said, are in fact trying to devise deals in which political risks are inserted alongside commercial risks – what he said is totally rejected by the Islamic Republic.

If anyone needed guarantees against political risks, it was Iran, Fakhrieh Kashan said in reference to the impact of western sanctions on the Iranian economy.

Why should Iran accept very exceptional terms and conditions in its contracts with European companies? This is not called a normal relationship,” he said.

Fakhrieh Kashan emphasized that European countries should take the adequate measures to prevent their businesses from including political risk in contracts, warning that any failure to do so will be against the nuclear agreement with Iran.

This is where European countries are failing to be committed to the nuclear agreement. One of the main reasons the signing of contracts in various sectors has been delayed is this issue.

European Firms Seek to Buy Iran’s Heavy Water: Senior Nuclear Official.

European Firms Seek to Buy Iran’s Heavy Water: Senior Nuclear Official. (IFPNews).

Behrouz Kamalvandi, who is the spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said Friday that the volume of the nuclear material sought by the companies stands at “several tons.”

He explained that Iran currently has no surplus of heavy water and that countries seeking purchases will have to place orders several months in advance.

“Even so, we will be hard pressed to address such orders by the year-end if we do receive them,” he told the Fars news agency in an interview.

Iran, which had been the subject of tight sanctions over its nuclear program until recently, has found new markets for its heavy water following a deal that it struck with six world powers last year.

Earlier this month, Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the AEOI, said Iran had sold 32 tons of heavy water to the US and delivered 38 tons of the nuclear material to Russia.

Referring to US purchases of Iranian heavy water, Kamalvandi said the Americans congratulated Iranian officials for the high-level purity of the nuclear product after receiving it.
He said the US is currently selling Iran’s heavy water at its pharmaceutical and research markets. “This,” he said, “is a source of national pride.”
The AEOI spokesman further said that so far, Iran has sold 70 tons of its heavy water on the international market thanks to the JCPOA.

Under the deal, Tehran can keep a heavy water stockpile of 130 tons and offer the surplus for sale on the market.

The administration of US President Barack Obama said in April that Washington would buy 8.6 million dollars worth of heavy water from Iran. Read the full story here.

An artificial intelligence system that correctly predicted the last three U.S. presidential elections puts Republican nominee Donald Trump ahead of Democrat rival Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House.

MogIA was developed by Sanjiv Rai, founder of Indian start-up Genic.ai. It takes in 20 million data points from public platforms including Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in the U.S. and then analyzes the information to create predictions.

The AI system was created in 2004, so it has been getting smarter all the time. It had already correctly predicted the results of the Democratic and Republican Primaries.

"If Trump loses, it will defy the data trend for the first time in the last 12 years since Internet engagement began in full earnest," Rai wrote in a report sent to CNBC. Hmmmm.........Meaning we'll know if the voting has been rigged? Read the full story here.

'Weiner the gift that keeps giving' FBI found Huma’s emails on a laptop she shared with ex husband. (NYPost).

Investigators got their hands on Huma Abedin’s emails when they searched a laptop that she jointly used with her husband, Anthony Weiner.

But the FBI will have to go to court to obtain a warrant in order to examine those emails, NBC reported Friday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reopened its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails after finding new evidence on seized devices belonging to Anthony Weiner and Huma Abedin, according to Fox News.

The devices were seized after it was revealed that Weiner, a former member of Congress and mayoral candidate, had been sexting with an underage girl.

The bombshell revelation came out Friday after FBI Director James Comey sent a letter to Congress explaining that new evidence in the Clinton investigation had emerged.

He said the new evidence developed as “part of an unrelated case,” without providing details.
Weiner could face 15 to 30 years in the slammer if found guilty of charges of sexual exploitation of children.

Obama 'Admin' Refusing to Cooperate With Investigation Into $1.7 Billion in Cash Payments to Iran. (WFB).

Attorney General Loretta Lynch is declining to comply with an investigation by leading members of Congress about the Obama administration’s secret efforts to send Iran $1.7 billion in cash earlier this year, prompting accusations that Lynch has “pleaded the Fifth” Amendment to avoid incriminating herself over these payments, according to lawmakers and communications exclusively obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

In an Oct. 24 response, Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik responded on Lynch’s behalf, refusing to answer the questions and informing the lawmakers that they are barred from publicly disclosing any details about the cash payment, which was bound up in a ransom deal aimed at freeing several American hostages from Iran.

The response from the attorney general’s office is “unacceptable” and provides evidence that Lynch has chosen to “essentially plead the fifth and refuse to respond to inquiries regarding [her] role in providing cash to the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism,” Rubio and Pompeo wrote on Friday in a follow-up letter to Lynch, according to a copy obtained by the Free Beacon. Palestinian 'pres' Abbas held meeting with Hamas leadership in MB den Qatar. (alyaexpress). [GoogleTranslated).

The three men held a business lunch together under the auspices of the Qatari Minister of étrangères.La Affairs meeting took place despite repeated denials by senior Fatah officials. Officials also said that There would be no renewal of the Hamas-Fatah during the reconciliation talks.

The Office of the President of the Palestinian Authority has sent an announcement very carefully made about the meeting. The statement said that Abbas spoke at a meeting in which both Mashaal and Haniyeh were present, and the meeting was held as part of lunch & business organized by the Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs. The message went on to say that the meeting was conducted to the displeasure of Mahmoud Abbas, and hinted that the meeting took place due to pressure on him by the Qatari government.

Abbas did not say anything revolutionary about the meeting, but said that the process of reconciliation between the two groups, and the need to Eliminate divisions between Gaza and the West Bank.

The two sides agreed that we must revive reconciliation talks, and that negotiations should be mediated by Qatar. (read with MB Member Turkey).

Despite the rhetoric, the chance that there will be a breakthrough in reconciliation talks is slim, mainly because Abbas has little or no interest in reconciliation.

The tensions between the two political parties are at a peak, especially after that Abbas canceled the municipal elections scheduled to take place in Judea and Samaria. Hamas should participate in elections for the first time in a decade, and was expected to win almost all local elections.

Fatah is also furious that Hamas has taken him to reject the lists of Fatah officials, candidates in the Gaza Strip.

From Health Canada:

Influenza is a respiratory illness caused primarily by the influenza A and B viruses.
While most people recover in 7 to 10 days, severe illness can occur. Some groups are at a greater risk of influenza-related complications.
It is estimated that influenza causes approximately 12,200 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths in Canada each year.
FluWatch, Canada's national influenza surveillance system, provides up-to-date information about currently circulating influenza strains
Getting vaccinated against influenza each autumn is the best way to help prevent influenza infection.

There are antiviral drugs, including oseltamivir (Tamiflu®) and zanamivir (Relenza®), currently authorized for influenza treatment and prophylaxis in Canada.

Risk groups for influenza-related complications:

The people at high risk of influenza-related complications or hospitalization include:
  • all pregnant women (risk increases with length of gestation)
  • adults and children with the following chronic health conditions:
    • cardiac or pulmonary disorders
    • diabetes mellitus and other metabolic diseases
    • cancer and other immune compromising conditions
    • renal disease
    • anemia or hemoglobinopathy
    • neurologic or neurodevelopment conditions
    • morbid obesity (BMI greater than or equal to 40)
    • children up to 18 years of age undergoing treatment for long periods with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)
  • residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities
  • people 65 years of age and older
  • all children younger than 60 months of age
  • Indigenous peoples
Annual influenza vaccination is the most effective way to help prevent influenza and its complications.

Every year, NACI issues a seasonal influenza statement that informs practitioners about the vaccines authorized for use that season. Further clinical guidance regarding influenza vaccination, including vaccine administration advice and safety considerations, can be found in the Canadian Immunization Guide. More info here.

'Antisemitic' House of Lords event condemned after audience 'blames Jews for Holocaust'.

'Antisemitic' House of Lords event condemned after audience 'blames Jews for Holocaust'. (JCA).

The Israel Embassy in London has condemned an event at the House of Lords at which audience members compared Israel to Daesh terrorists and suggested Jews were to blame for the Holocaust.

One man said Zionism was a “perversion of Judaism”, and then implied an American rabbi had provoked Hitler into murdering six million Jews in the Shoah, using quotes reportedly taken from a neo-Nazi website.

Another speaker is shown announcing, to applause: "If anybody is antisemitic, it's the Israelis themselves."

The session was run by the Palestinian Return Centre (PRC) and hosted by Baroness Tonge, the Liberal Democrat member and former MP who now sits as an independent peer.

It launched what the organisation calls the Balfour Apology Campaign, ahead of the centenary of the Balfour Declaration next year.

Video footage of the event shows Baroness Tonge listening to the audience member’s comments about Rabbi Stephen Wise, a leading figure in the United States in the 1930s.

The man – reportedly a member of the anti-Zionist strictly Orthodox Neturei Karta sect – claims Hitler was “pushed over the edge” by the rabbi’s comments, and goes on to talk about boycotts.

Baroness Tonge responds: “Thank you very much. I think it’s very important that the word boycott has come up. The BDS, the campaign to boycott Israeli goods and services, and divestment from Israel, most of us think is very, very important indeed.

David Collier, a blogger who attended the session, said he was later physically sick.

He wrote: "I witnessed a Jew-hating festival at the heart of the British estate." Read the full story here.

Six NATO countries say ready to dispatch their forces to Black Sea area, among them Russia's new BFF Turkey.

Six NATO countries say ready to dispatch their forces to Black Sea area, among them Russia's new BFF Turkey. (Tass).

As many as six NATO countries are prepared to send their ground-based, naval and air force units to the Black Sea area in 2017, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday upon the completion of the first day of a conference of the North-Atlantic pact's defense ministers.

He said Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, and the U.S. had confirmed their plans to dispatch units to Romania for a strengthening of NATO presense in the Black Sea area.

Specifically, he said

  • Albania, Italy, Poland, and Slovenia will join the Canadian military already depoloyed in Latvia
  • Belgium, Croatia, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands,
  • and Norway will join the Germans in Lithuania.
  • Denmark and France will send unit to pool with the Brits in Estonia, while Romania and Britain will augment the U.S. troops in Poland. Hmmm.....Putin should know better than to trust Erdogan. Read the full story here.

Medical research charity warns: "Expect ZIKA to spread to India and Africa".

Medical research charity warns:  "Expect ZIKA to spread to India and Africa". (Guardian).
The Zika virus, which causes brain damage in babies, is likely to spread to India and the continent of Africa, according to the director of the Wellcome Trust, a medical charity deeply involved in research to try to limit the damage.
I think we can anticipate global spread,” said Jeremy Farrar, speaking to the Guardian alongside Sue Desmond-Hellmann, the chief executive officer of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “Given the [Aedes aegypti] mosquito’s availability across the world, I think the spread will next be across Asia and I think we really have to be prepared for it spreading in Africa. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t.”

Last month, 16 pregnant women in Singapore were confirmed to have zika virus. “You can anticipate reports from Vietnam, from Indonesia, from India. I don’t think we’re even at the start of the Zika knowledge base yet,” said Farrar.
The two philanthropic organisations, together with the Brazilian, US and UK governments, have announced $18m (£14.7m) funding for an ambitious project to release mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria in two urban areas of Brazil and Colombia. The bacteria renders the mosquitoes unable to transmit viruses. They breed with local mosquitoes, producing offspring with Wolbachia, a bacteria carried by 60% of insects that is harmless to humans.
If it works, it will help limit not just Zika but also other flaviviruses, including dengue and yellow fever. Read the full story here.

Russia designing new high speed ‘aircraft carrier killer’ torpedo to boost naval power.

Russia designing new high speed ‘aircraft carrier killer’ torpedo to boost naval power. (Rbth).

In early October, Russian military analysts reported that a group of designers working for the navy were completing work on a completely new high-speed torpedo. The widely-known Shkval (“Squall”) torpedo, which for a long time was a global leader in terms of speed and the destructive force of its warhead, will be replaced by a new torpedo, called Khishchnik (“Predator”).

No specific information is available yet on what the new torpedo is like and what its technical characteristics are: The project is classified. It is only known that it is being developed by the Elektropribor design bureau, which specializes in aviation technology.

The connection is not accidental – after all, what is being developed is not just a torpedo but what is in effect an underwater missile whose engine has a lot in common with its airborne equivalents. One thing is certain: In terms of its main specifications, the Khishchnik will exceed its famous predecessor, the Shkval.

An ordinary torpedo has a speed of no more than 140 kilometers per hour (87 mph), which allows a ship targeted by it to maneuver and avoid being hit. The Shkval, however, leaves the enemy practically no chance: Its speed is nearly three times the speed of a standard torpedo. This means that a targeted ship has just a third of the standard time for maneuver. In real naval combat that means a nearly inevitable hit.

The secret of the Shkval’s speed is in its special engine, which runs on solid fuel. While an ordinary torpedo gains speed with the help of spinning propellers, the Shkval uses supercavitation. A special design of its engine makes it possible to achieve a unique physical effect, whereby a gas bubble forms around the moving torpedo. That allows the projectile to move virtually in a vacuum, minimizing drag. Read the full story here.

Islamic Pakistan ranked second-last on gender equality index.

Islamic Pakistan ranked second-last on gender equality index. (ET).

Pakistan has been ranked the second worst country in the world for gender equality for a second year in a row.

The World Economic Forum’s global gender gap ranked Pakistan at a dismal 143 with a 0.556 score. Pakistan ranked just above Yemen among 144 countries, performing way behind India and Bangladesh which ranked at 87 and 72 respectively. War torn Syria performed better than Pakistan with a score of 142.

South Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan secured 100th, 110th, 115th and 121st spots respectively.

In the overall ranking, Iceland took the first spot, followed by Finland and Norway. Interestingly, the United States, with a rank of 45, saw a drop in its rankings owing to decrease on Economic Participation and Opportunity.

In December last year, a UN report said Pakistan ranked 121, better than India and Afghanistan in gender equality.

For those who are interested Islamist 'Dictatorship' Turkey ranked 130 place. In 2006 they were still at the 105 place the Erdogan rule takes it's toll on Gender Equality in Turkey. The number of Women being murdered in Turkey has also risen during Erdogan's rule. Read the full story here.

'Zika uncontrollable, will become endemic': CDC Director Tom Frieden.

'Zika uncontrollable, will become endemic': CDC Director Tom Frieden. (MiamiHerald). HT: Crof.
The nation’s highest ranking infectious disease expert delivered some sobering news on Zika to a Miami audience on Tuesday, telling them that the mosquito-borne virus is more widespread than Florida health officials have reported and that the rapid spread of pathogens such as Zika represents “the new normal” in an age of global travel and trade, booming cities and climate change.
“Here’s the plain truth: that Zika and other diseases spread by Aedes aegypti [mosquito species] are really not controllable with current technologies. So we will see this become endemic,” Tom Frieden, a physician and director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told a group of about 100 people gathered at the InterContinental Miami hotel for The Atlantic magazine’s CityLab conference.
Frieden’s takeaway advice for public officials tasked with protecting the public from disease outbreaks: “Invest in public health,” he said. “It pays off.”
Unprecedented in its ability to spread by sexual contact as well as mosquito bites, and to cause birth defects — most notably microcephaly in children born to mothers infected while pregnant — Zika took health officials by surprise this year, Frieden said, noting that there’s still a lot that scientists do not know about the virus’s effects.
“Zika has surprised us,” he said. “It’s been difficult to predict. It’s had characteristics that we have not seen with other diseases before. What we anticipate will happen is that this season will calm down within the continental United States. We hope that Miami-Dade will stop having cases, but we can't promise that. ... We will see parts of the hemisphere where it will be endemic. It will come back every year.”
And though Florida has reported 1,064 Zika cases, including 190 mosquito-borne infections, Frieden said the real number likely is much higher.
“A rule of thumb,” he said, “is for every case you diagnose you’ve probably got 10 more.” Read the full story here.

Frieden's case total is correct, according to today's Florida Health Zika update, which mentions six new cases—two of them local.

Turkey: Emergency Decrees Facilitate Torture! Human rights watch reports.

Turkey: Emergency Decrees Facilitate Torture! Human rights watch reports.  (HRW).

Istanbul – Turkish police have tortured and otherwise ill-treated individuals in their custody after emergency decrees removed crucial safeguards in the wake of a failed coup attempt in July, 2016, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.
The 43-page report, “A Blank Check: Turkey’s Post-Coup Suspension of Safeguards Against Torture,” documents how the weakening of safeguards through decrees adopted under the state of emergency has negatively affected police detention conditions and the rights of detainees.

It details 13 cases of alleged abuse, including stress positions, sleep deprivation, severe beatings, sexual abuse, and rape threats, since the coup attempt.

“By removing safeguards against torture, the Turkish government effectively wrote a blank check to law enforcement agencies to torture and mistreat detainees as they like,” said Hugh Williamson, Europe and Central Asia. Read the full report here. Download report PDF here.
