But any move toward Internet regulation or monitoring by the U.S. government or industry could trigger fierce opposition from the public. The discussions come as private, corporate and government computers across the U.S. are increasingly being taken over and exploited by hackers and other computer criminals.Read the full story here. This might be related to an earlier story we brought beginning last week.Click here for comments.

  • Student who found FBI tracking device stuck to his car sparks legal row on invasion of privacy.Yasir Afifi, a 20-year-old computer salesman and student took his car in for an oil change earlier this month and his mechanic spotted an odd wire hanging from the undercarriage. The wire was attached to a strange magnetic device that puzzled Mr Afifi and the mechanic. They freed it from the car and posted images of it online, asking for help in identifying it.Two days later, FBI agents arrived at Mr Afifi's Santa Clara apartment and demanded the return of their property - a global positioning system tracking device now at the center of a raging legal debate over privacy rights. That investigators don't need a warrant to use the devices in California troubles privacy advocates, technophiles, criminal defense attorneys and others. The federal appeals court based in Washington D.C. said in August that investigators must obtain a warrant for GPS tracking. The state high courts of New York, Washington and Oregon have ruled similarly. But the Obama administration last month asked the D.C. federal appeals court to change its ruling, calling the decision 'vague and unworkable' and arguing that investigators will lose access to a tool they now use 'with great frequency'.Legal scholars predict the U.S. Supreme Court will ultimately resolve the issue since so many courts disagree.Mr Afifi is represented by Zahra Billoo of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the country's largest Islamic civil rights group.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:BloggerBase.Free Speech vs Shielding Islam from Critics. The controversy over attempts to squelch "defamation of religions" is heating up. Individuals and organizations are speaking out. One of my Google Alerts brought my attention to UN to consider anti-blasphemy laws proposed by the Organization of Islamic Conference, would make criticism of Islam illegal in America.Several participants are not native speakers of English and some of the concepts under discussion are not easy to express, so much of the discussion is difficult to listen to. Half of one exchange has been covered by several blogs including Front Page Magazine. Pakistan's Ambassador let fly with some heated remarks and hauled tail when a Canadian human rights advocate responded forcefully. In my view, the Ambassador's rant deserves more scrutiny, which it will receive presently.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:TheEndoftheAmericanDream.16 New Records That The American Economy Has Set During The Past 12 Months – And They Are All Bad.Over the past twelve months, the U.S. economy has continued to come apart like a 20 dollar suit. During that time it seems like more bad economic news has been coming out nearly every single day. Instead of getting better, the problems facing the U.S. economy only seem to be multiplying. The U.S. government and the U.S. financial system continue to absolutely drown in debt. Factories, jobs and massive amounts of wealth continue to fly out of the United States every month at an astounding pace. Meanwhile, the number of Americans enrolled in anti-poverty programs continues to shatter records and the U.S. housing industry continues to set records for futility. The truth is that less Americans are living the American Dream today than were living it twelve months ago. The U.S. economy is in a serious state of decline, and it is time for all of us to wake up and admit the truth.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

Maybe Secretary [Janet] Napolitano [of the Homeland Security Department] should worry more about that than about guns being smuggled into Mexico," said political strategist Mike Baker. In nearly every case, government inspectors accepted oral assertions and counterfeit identification provided by GAO undercover investigators as proof of U.S. citizenship and allowed them to enter the country. Out of 436 members, I've picked out 139 members which have voted against Israel at least 1 out 5 times during this past 111th Congress. Of the 139, I expose the 60 worst which voted against the Jewish State between 2 and 5 times, where they're from, their districts, and who their opponents are.I've contacted their opponents requesting a position on Israel statement and have so far received 2 responses which I've included. • HT:BigPeace.Xenophobia Grows in Germany Towards Turks, Arabs, and Jews. But xenophobia is not just a Christian versus Muslim thing. In fact, it’s far more often an immigration issue, often unrelated to religion. In Europe we see harsh immigration issues raised with the Roma Gypsies, who are mostly Christian, and in America, immigration has been a highly visceral topic with (Christian) immigrants from Mexico to Brazil. The issues are often remarkably similar from one case to the next: The immigrants complain of relentless discrimination, and the local population accuses the immigrants of taking jobs and causing crime. From the point of view of Generational Dynamics, unfortunately none of this is a surprise. The survivors of WW II saw how 1930s xenophobia led to wars of extermination, and as long as they were in charge, xenophobic tendencies have been kept to a minimum. That’s why we would have seen very few of these tendencies in the 1990s. What we’re seeing today is truly remarkable — the rapid growth of xenophobia around the world, in many different forms, for the first time since the 1930s. The path to world war is becoming clearer and clearer.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

I was disappointed by the fact that the number of apartments was cut back to mollify the Obama administration. In the meantime, Israel was defended by a surprising source on Friday: Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-NY). “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. It is not a settlement," said Rep. Gary Ackerman Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. "As such, the resumption of construction in Jerusalem is not a justification for a crisis, a showdown, a meltdown or even a hissy fit. AMJA’s mission statement claims the organization was, “…founded to provide guidance for Muslims living in North America…AMJA is a religious organization that does not exploit religion to achieve any political ends, but instead provides practical solutions within the guidelines of Islam and the nation’s laws to the various challenges experienced by Muslim communities.”In response to the specific query, “Is there a such thing as Marital Rape?,” the AMJA issued fatwa #2982.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:AmericanThinker.A Metric for Muslim Moderation.Islam is a total system for the supervision and governance of human affairs. It comprises religion, politics, jurisprudence, military affairs, economics, culture, domestic relations, and every other aspect of life. It is the answer to all questions, albeit from the perspective of a seventh-century revelation. Its fundamental tenets may not be altered, since it is taken to originate by Divine command.Reflexive appeal to the First Amendment clouds our thinking and serves to obscure this obvious incompatibility. In America, Muslims are free to embrace the theology of their choosing, but they are not free to justify political totalism as a religious tenet. We cannot avoid recognizing this incompatibility. However discomforting it may be, we must face the fact, sooner rather than later, that Muslims in America must choose between Sharia and liberty.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • Favorite Son.Belarus embraces Chagall but leaves his Jewishness at the door.In Belarus, Europe’s last Communist-style dictatorship, tourism is not a big business. So I was intrigued to see busloads of sightseers roll through the city of Vitebsk during a recent visit there. Their destination, as it happened, was a trail paying homage to the country’s most famous native son, painter Marc Chagall. In a burst of nationalism, the country’s culture czars are eager to set the record straight that the 20th century’s most recognizable Jewish artist was not Russian, as commonly believed. They also realize that they can cash in on his name. The destruction of architectural heritage extends throughout Belarus, where only a few yeshivas and synagogues seized by the Soviets have been returned to Jewish hands. Most of these reclaimed buildings lie in such disrepair that handing them back is not exactly a generous act. It goes without saying that the tiny Jewish population lacks the money to restore most of the properties to functionality. The country’s first yeshiva, in Volozhin, has gaping holes in its floor. It, at least, has a roof and four walls, unlike the oriental synagogue in Bobruisk. While the government preserves historic churches in Grodno, the 16th-century Great Synagogue, a masterpiece of Italianate architecture, crumbles. As for Vitebsk, Chagall could never bring himself to return. In 1973, he traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg but avoided Belarus. “He said that at his age it was dangerous to get too emotional,” said Khmelnitskaya, the museum director. “He was probably afraid to see how Vitebsk had changed from what he remembered.”More on Chagall here.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

Hezbollah boasts widespread support among Shiites and virtually runs a state-within-a-state in Shiite areas of Lebanon. "You proved that your resistance, your patience, your steadfastness, were stronger than all the tanks and warplanes of the enemy," Ahmadinejad said at the rally in Bint Jbeil, about two miles (four kilometers) from the border. • Beheadings, hangings plague Tijuana amid festival.A rash of decapitations and other gruesome killings have hit Tijuana since Mexican President Felipe Calderon visited the border city last week and called it a success in his drug war.The most recent killing occurred just before midnight Tuesday when motorists found a decapitated body underneath a bridge on a road leading to the beachside neighborhood of Playas de Tijuana, according to a police report Wednesday.Reporters at the scene saw a rope hanging from the bridge, suggesting the man had been hung from his feet but was too heavy and plunged into oncoming traffic. The discovery came a day after two other beheaded bodies were found hanging from their feet in Tijuana.Police said they were still conducting forensic tests on the body found Tuesday and had no immediate comment on the identity of the man or the circumstances of his death.Earlier Tuesday, police found a human head inside a bag in another Tijuana neighborhood, but it did not belong to the body found underneath the bridge.According to police reports, at least 16 people have been killed in the city since Sunday — a surge from the normal rate of about two homicides a day.Worst Christmas gift idea for 2010 A trip to Mexico?Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • Rape 'impossible' in marriage, says Muslim cleric.A senior Muslim cleric who runs the country's largest network of sharia courts has sparked controversy by claiming that there is no such thing as rape within marriage.Sheikh Maulana Abu Sayeed, president of the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain, said that men who rape their wives should not be prosecuted because "sex is part of marriage". And he claimed that many married women who alleged rape were lying. His comments have angered senior police officers, who say that such statements undermine the work they do to encourage women to report rape, a notoriously under-reported crime. He told the website: "Clearly there cannot be any rape within the marriage. Maybe aggression, maybe indecent activity... Because when they got married, the understanding was that sexual intercourse was part of the marriage, so there cannot be anything against sex in marriage. Of course, if it happened without her desire, that is no good, that is not desirable.Later he told this newspaper: "In Islamic sharia, rape is adultery by force. So long as the woman is his wife, it cannot be termed as rape. It is reprehensible, but we do not call it rape."British law was changed in 1991, making rape within marriage illegal.Dave Whatton, Chief Constable of Cheshire and spokesman on rape for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: "We know that the majority of rapes do not take place through strangers attacking women late at night but between acquaintances and within marriages and partnerships."It is a fundamental principle that sharia law should not replace the laws of the UK. Putting out views that rape can be dealt with in another way fundamentally undermines everything we are trying to do."The cleric's comments come just days after Germaine Greer suggested that rape victims should name and shame their attackers online instead of reporting it to the police.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:SultanKnish. The Vanishing Christians of the Middle East. The Synod of Bishops for the Middle East is meant to address the decline of Christians in the Muslim world. The reason for the decline is obvious. It is the willingness to discuss that reason which is at issue.Christians in the Middle East are a minority in a Muslim region. Even the more moderate Muslim countries, such as Egypt, marginalize Christians and routinely deprive them of basic civil rights. Egypt is an American ally and nearly 10 percent of the country is Christian, yet that 10 percent live as second-class citizens, discriminated against and constantly subject to violence. The rising tide of Islamization has made it more dangerous than ever to be a non-Muslim in a Muslim country, in ways that range from everyday discrimination to terrorist attacks. But the West is suffused by a narrative which insists that Islam is tolerant and promotes tolerance. Such a false narrative makes it extremely difficult to address or recognize the problem.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • What's next for net neutrality debate?Net neutrality is at a standstill. On the campaign trail, an open Internet was one of President Barack Obama’s top technology priorities. Over the past five months, telecom and Internet companies have taken multiple stabs at coming up with a compromise for the controversial issue. But it was all for naught — at least for now. Talks fell apart at the Federal Communications Commission over the summer. Last month, the latest effort to craft a legislative fix failed when Republicans refused to support a proposal by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.).So what’s next? Here’s how the parties view the current state of play — and how they hope to move ahead.Congress: Waxman said he would “not close the door on moving legislation this Congress” on Net neutrality, adding that “cooler heads may prevail after the elections.”Cooler heads being a rare commodity in Washington these days, there’s no guarantee the politics will be less tricky after Nov. 2. If Democrats retain control of the House, Republicans may be willing to revisit the proposal, sources say. But if Republicans gain control of the House, they’ll probably want to come up with their own set of ground rules.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:PajamasMedia.Congressional Muslim Staffers Hosted Second Al-Qaeda Cleric on Capitol Hill.a recent New York Post article about how Johnson’s former employer, Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), complained to Homeland Security in 2006 about the questioning of another al-Qaeda-linked cleric, Anwar Hajjaj, stated that Hajjaj was then leading prayers for the Muslim staffers on Capitol Hill.In fact, Meeks invoked Hajjaj’s continued presence on the Hill to demonstrate that he was a “highly regarded” Islamic scholar. The presence of two al-Qaeda clerics on Capitol Hill — hosted by Muslim congressional staffers — is problematic on several levels. As we see in Rep. Meeks’ intervention in Hajjaj’s case, it is his involvement with Muslim staffers on the Hill that was invoked to demonstrate his acceptability. Thus, these high-level government contacts give these terror-tied clerics legitimacy and cover from media and public scrutiny.Another deleterious effect was identified by a group of Muslim leaders who spoke on Capitol Hill earlier this month, hosted by Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC), who complained that the mainstreaming of terror-tied Islamic clerics by government officials ends up crowding-out the voices of true moderate leaders — many of whom have been openly critical of Muslim Brotherhood-backed infiltration efforts. But the stories of al-Qaeda clerics Anwar al-Awlaki and Anwar Hajjaj leading prayers on Capitol Hill raise even more questions about who else the Congressional Muslim Staff Association has been hosting in the People’s House. That’s a question members of Congress and other media outlets ought to be asking.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

He explained that Bush's policy of condemning and isolating the resistance camp had strengthened the moderate Arab regimes, whereas the policy of openness towards this camp, employed by the current president, Barack Obama, is weakening the U.S.'s allies in the Middle East and undermining America's own interests and status there. [For example,] Fatah's threats to withdraw from the U.S.-sponsored negotiations [with Israel] have become a commonplace phenomenon... Israel [too] sees Obama as a weak president who cannot fulfill [the needs] of the Hebrew state, even though he has promised to protect it from any danger... • November 30th Could Be the Day the Government Seizes Control of the Internet.November 30th, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) could potentially engage in one of the largest federal power grabs we have ever seen. After two years of this Presidential Administration and this Congress, that is saying an awful lot about an awful lot.And what’s worse, the FCC would be doing it without Congress weighing in. At the FCC’s November meeting – note the coincidental date of choice, AFTER the impending election – three unelected bureaucrats (of five) could simply vote themselves rulers of 1/6th of our entire economy – the information and technology sector.Meaning the Internet that you currently enjoy – that has been a marvel of economic and information innovation and success – will be subject to vast new governmental regulations. You didn’t elect these people – but they are on the verge of electing themselves Internet overlords. The remedy to all of this is crystal clear. Congress should do what it’s supposed to do – write a law that defines and details the FCC’s role (or lack thereof) in regulating the Internet. And the FCC should do what it’s supposed to do – unless and until Congress acts, NOTHING.What the FCC must NOT do is unilaterally vote itself vast new powers under the cover of bureaucratic, post-election darkness."They don't trust me because of my middle name?"Read the full hijacking story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:TeaandPolitics.Spain: Muslims protest Bishop's petition not to call Cordoba's Cathedral as a "Mosque".They say "Muslims defend Spanish and European values".The Bishop of Cordoba, Bishop Demetrio Fernandez, wrote this weekend's edition of ABC Córdoba, that Córdoba Cathedral has been a Catholic house of worship for eight centuries, "declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which is open only the Catholic faith. The prelate also noted that "the Catholic community of Cordova has been involved in its maintenance" and "celebrates every day the mysteries of the Christian faith" in it:"When the Muslims arrived in Cordoba in 711, the place was already a sacred place. It was the ancient Basilica of San Vicente Martyr, which was destroyed to build the mosque.King Fernando III the Saint came out of blood in the city on June 28, 1236 and ordered to consecrate the temple which was built as a mosque, and was saved from destruction by the good King Fernando negotiations with the occupying Muslims, who wanted to destroy it before surrendering. "Therefore, Bishop Fernandez believes that the term "mosque" in the signs to the city are wrong. The bishop of the city claims to be called to the scene as it is 800 years: the Cathedral of Cordoba."There is no problem recognizing the Muslim caliphs of Córdoba spent large quantities of money to build this temple for God, which is the jewel in the city of Cordoba. Mukasey also ate lunch from the same halal menu the prisoners choose their meals from every day. What struck Mukasey was the extent to which those who demonized the Bush administration’s efforts to fight terrorism were intentionally misinforming and propagandizing the public with no regard to the damage they might do to America’s safety.President Obama famously ordered the closure of the facility at Guantanamo immediately upon taking office. But he also signed other executive orders–including restricting interrogation techniques to those outlined in the Army Field Manual.“A world like that, where choices have no consequences, is a world inhabited only by children, and then only in their fantasies,” Mukasey concludes. “If we try to live in it, we do so at peril to ourselves and our children.”Obama’s prosecution of the war on terror inspired Mukasey’s extended essay How Obama has Mishandled the War on Terror. The essay is part of a series of critical pamphlets published by Encounter Books called Broadsides.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:Redstate. You May Want to Walk Back From that Remark, Barry.President Obama:"A Republican majority in Congress would mean “hand-to-hand combat” on Capitol Hill for the next two years, threatening policies Democrats have enacted to stabilize the economy."If the Republican majority includes the nominees I have listed with photos below, then you just might wantican majority includes the nominees I have listed with photos below, then you just might want to walk back your words. You have only been acquainted with establishment GOP congressmen like Cantor and Lindsey Graham, and you are factually incorrect to think the new GOP members of Congress want to return to the Hastert and Frist type of Republican ideas of what is the right course for our nation. The nominees I have listed are all proud of their service as military veterans. I only listed the ones who are in a close contest, and the congressional districts are slightly D partisan, (D+1 to D+5). I understand there are other GOP nominees with military service, and I mean no disparagement by not adding them to my list. Some of the ones you are already familiar with, and others have not been mentioned as frequently as I think they should.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • Germans break silence over immigration. When Angela Merkel sat beside Recep Tayyip Erdogan as their two countries played each other at football on Friday, nothing could have seemed friendlier. The Turkish prime minister's scarf even combined the colours of both teams, integrated nicely in the fabric. Like our two peoples in the fabric of society, it seemed to say. And when Mesut Ozil, the star of the German side, scored against the land of his parents, he seemed almost embarrassed. It is characteristic of the tact with which Germans - for so he is - treat matters of "race", for want of a better word. For very obvious reasons, it's not been an area where they want to go. The ghosts of the past have been too frightening.Or so it was until recently. In the space of a few months, there have been outpourings of strong anti-immigrant feeling from mainstream politicians.Suddenly, it is back on the agenda and back on the front pages, particularly of the mass-market Bild newspaper.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • HT:WeaselZippers.Anti-Obama Billboard Raises Eyebrows.A Grand Junction billboard depicting President Barack Obama as a terrorist, a gangster, a Mexican bandit and a gay man is getting national attention. The billboard, erected along the I-70 Business Loop between 28 1/2 and 29 roads sometime Monday, depicts the four “Obamas” sitting around a table with playing cards showing only sixes bunched in groups of three. Also on the table is a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a liberty bell, a toy soldier and a statue of Justice holding a balance.Beneath the Obama caricatures are numerous rats, some of which are labeled as the IRS, trial lawyers, the EPA and the Fed. Sitting above all that is a line, “Vote DemocRAT. Join the game,” which is positioned between two vultures, one of which is labeled the U.N. and the other with the name Soros, a reference to George Soros, a major national Democratic financial supporter.Stories about the billboard have been picked up by several right-leaning blogs and the conservative magazine National Review.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.
