British Peer Lord Nazir Ahmed suspended after 'offering £10m bounty on Barack Obama and George Bush'.

British Peer Lord Nazir Ahmed suspended after 'offering £10m bounty on Barack Obama and George Bush'.(TheTelegraph). Lord Nazir Ahmed, 53, who in 1998 became the first Muslim life peer, was reported to have made the comments at a conference in Haripur in Pakistan. A Labour Party spokesman said: "We have suspended Lord Ahmed pending investigation. If these comments are accurate we utterly condemn these remarks which are totally unacceptable." According to Pakistan's Express Tribune newspaper Lord Ahmed offered the bounty in response to a US action a week ago. The US issued a $10 million reward for the capture of Pakistani militant leader Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba group, who it suspects of orchestrating the 2008 Mumbai attacks in which 166 people died as terrorists stormed hotels and a train station. The British peer reportedly said: "'If the US can announce a reward of $10 million for the (capture) of Hafiz Saeed, I can announce a bounty of £10 million (for the capture of) President Obama and his predecessor, George Bush." Lord Ahmed reportedly said he would arrange the bounty at any cost, even if he had to sell his own personal assets including his house.
He was said to have made the comments at a reception arranged in his honour by the business community of Haripur on Friday. A former Pakistani foreign minister and a provincial education minister were said to have been present at the reception. Lord Ahmed, who was born in Pakistan, became Baron Ahmed of Rotherham at the age of 40. In 2007 he was highly critical of the awarding of a knighthood to Salman Rushdie, claiming the author had "blood on his hands."
In its statement suspending Lord Ahmed the Labour Party said: "The international community is rightly doing all in its power to seek justice for the victims of the Mumbai bombings and halt terrorism." Lord Ahmed firmly denied offering a bounty, but said he had told the meeting that Mr Bush and former-Labour prime minister Tony Blair should be prosecuted for war crimes.
Speaking from Pakistan to the Press association he challenged the Labour Party to provide evidence for the suspension. He said: "They have suspended me? That's a surprise to me. I did not know. "I never said those words. I did not offer a bounty. I said that there have been war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan and those people who have got strong allegations against them - George W Bush and Tony Blair - have been involved in illegal wars and should be brought to justice. "I do not think there's anything wrong with that. If the Labour Party want to suspend me I will deal with the Labour Party. They will have to give me some evidence."Read the full story here.

Overnight Music Video - Ghost Riders In the Sky By: Frankie Laine

Frankie Laine was born Francesco Paolo LoVecchio on March 30, 1913, to Giovanni and Cresenzia LoVecchio (née Salerno). [His actual Cook County, Ill, birth Certificate, no. 14436, was already Americanized at the time of his birth, with his name written as "Frank Lovecchio," his mother as "Anna Salerno," and his father as "John Lovecchio," with the "V" lower case in each instance, except in the "Reported by" section with "John Lo Vecchio " written in.[14]] His parents had emigrated from Monreale, Sicily, to Chicago's "Little Italy," where his father worked at one time as the personal barber for gangster Al Capone. His family appears to have had several Mafia connections, and young Francesco was living with his grandfather when the latter was killed by members of a rival faction. The eldest of eight children, he got his first taste of singing as a member of the choir in the Church of the Immaculate Conception's elementary school. He next attended Lane Technical High School, now known as Lane Technical College Prep High School, where he helped to develop his lung power and breath control by joining the track and field and basketball teams. He realized he wanted to be a singer when he missed time in school to see Al Jolson's current talking picture, "The Singing Fool." Jolson would later visit Laine when both were filming pictures in 1949, and at about this time, Jolson remarked that Laine was going to put all the other singers out of business.Source.

Taliban militants free 400 prisoners including 20'very dangerous Taliban militants' in dramatic attack on Pakistan jail.

Taliban militants free 400 prisoners including 20'very dangerous Taliban militants' in dramatic attack on Pakistan jail.(DailyMail).Taliban fighters armed with rocket-propelled grenades stormed a prison in north west Pakistan and freed 400 prisoners, it emerged today. The raid by more than 100 fighters was a dramatic display of the strength of the insurgency gripping the nuclear-armed country. Police said at least 20 of the inmates set loose were 'very dangerous'.Authorities fear the escaped prisoners may now rejoin the fight, giving momentum and a propaganda boost to a movement that has killed thousands of Pakistani officials and ordinary citizens since 2007. The attackers battled their way into the prison before dawn in the city of Bannu close to the Afghan border and near Peshawar. Bannu prison superintendent Zahid Khan said they used explosives and hand grenades to knock down the main gates and two walls. 'They were carrying modern and heavy weapons,' said Mr Khan. 'They fired rockets.' Once inside the building, the attackers headed straight to the area of the prison where death-row prisoners were being kept, he said. Police officer Shafique Khan said they fought with guards for around two hours, setting part of the prison on fire before freeing the 380 inmates, including at least 20 'very dangerous Taliban militants'. One escaped prisoner, Adnan Rashid, was on death row for his involvement in an assassination attempt against former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, said Zahid Khan. The prison in Bannu housed 944 inmates. A Taliban spokesman, Asimullah Mehsud, claimed the movement's fighters freed 1,200 of their comrades. The group is known to make exaggerated claims.Read the full story here.

Chicago Law Prof on Obama: "The Professors Hated Him because he was Lazy, Unqualified and Never Attended any of the Faculty Meetings".

Chicago Law Prof on Obama: "The Professors Hated Him because he was Lazy, Unqualified and Never Attended any of the Faculty Meetings"(GWP).The highest tenured faculty member at Chicago Law spoke out on Barack Obama saying, “Professors hated him because he was lazy, unqualified, never attended any of the faculty meetings.” Doug Ross reported this and more: I spent some time with the highest tenured faculty member at Chicago Law a few months back, and he did not have many nice things to say about “Barry.” Obama applied for a position as an adjunct and wasn’t even considered. A few weeks later the law school got a phone call from the Board of Trustees telling them to find him an office, put him on the payroll, and give him a class to teach. The Board told him he didn’t have to be a member of the faculty, but they needed to give him a temporary position. He was never a professor and was hardly an adjunct. The other professors hated him because he was lazy, unqualified, never attended any of the faculty meetings, and it was clear that the position was nothing more than a political stepping stool. According to my professor friend, he had the lowest intellectual capacity in the building.
He also doubted whether he was legitimately an editor on the Harvard Law Review, because if he was, he would be the first and only editor of an Ivy League law review to never be published while in school (publication is or was a requirement).
This photo of Barack Obama teaching in Chicago was posted in February 2008 atPrestoPundit. In this class Barack Obama was teaching his students the principles of Saul Alinsky. Notice the flow chart indicating the flow of money and power out of productive businesses (“CORP”) and into the political class (“MAYOR”): The heading at the top reads “POWER ANALYSIS”. The sub-heading reads “RELATIONSHIPS BUILD ON SELF INTEREST”.
The symbol on the arrow between “CORP” and “MAYOR” is the “$” sign. Saul Alinsky came up with the idea of power analysis, which looks at relationships built on self-interest between corporations, banks and utilities. Barack Obama was teaching students in Chicago the Alinsky Principles. Of course, this is not a surprise. After watching the bribes, kickbacks, lies and threats this past year as Democrats fought to take over the health care industry, it’s obvious that the only subject Obama excels at is Alinsky’s Rules For Radicals. More… Isn’t it a bit odd that the only photo we’ve seen of Obama teaching, he’s explaining the Alinsky principles? Comment: Note the date of this article-no MSM ever reported on this-yes, it is time to properly vet the candidates!!Hmmm.....The smartest Pres EVAH!Read the full story here.

N. Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Speaks Publicly For First Time.

                                                            “Military first ?”

N. Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Speaks Publicly For First Time.(Fox).North Korean leader Kim Jong Un spoke publicly for the first time Sunday, just two days after a failed rocket launch, praising his father Kim Jong Il’s “military first” policy during celebrations marking the 100th birthday of the nation’s late founder. Kim, who has been seen but not publicly heard since taking over after Kim Jong Il’s death in December, stepped to the podium to speak before tens of thousands of people gathered in Pyongyang’s main square for meticulously choreographed festivities meant to glorify his grandfather, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung. Kim Jong Un said the era when nuclear arms could be used to threaten his country was “forever over.” He called for strengthening the country’s “military first” policy by placing the “first, second and third” priorities on military might.
He said his country had built a “mighty military” capable of both offense and defense in any type of modern warfare. “Superiority in military technology is no longer monopolized by imperialists,” he said. Soldiers are more important than rockets and artillery, Kim said, and military officers should treat their troops “like brothers and sisters.” He said he is “heartbroken” that the rival Koreas have been divided for decades, and said North Korea “will cooperate with anyone” who truly wishes for reunification.
North Korea defied the U.S. and others Friday by firing a long-range rocket that space officials said was mounted with an observational satellite despite warnings against pushing ahead with the provocative launch. Washington and others say it was a covert test of long-range missile technology. Hours after the rocket splintered into pieces over the Yellow Sea, the country made an unusual admission of failure, but Kim did not mention the launch in his remarks Sunday. Kim Jong Un has since underlined the country’s “military first” policy with a budget that allocates a sizable chunk of funding to defense spending. International condemnation of the rocket firing was swift, including the suspension of U.S. food aid, and there are worries that the North’s next move could be an even more provocative nuclear test. The U.N. Security Council denounced the launch as a violation of resolutions that prohibit North Korea from developing its nuclear and missile programs. The council imposed sanctions on North Korea after its first nuclear test in 2006 and stepped up sanctions after its second in 2009.Read the full story here.

Saudi woman offers SR5 million for suitable husband that “appreciate marriage life.”

Saudi woman offers SR5 million for suitable husband that “appreciate marriage life.”(BM).CAIRO: A Saudi woman is offering SR5 million to get married — even if it is a misyar marriage (the couple lives separately and see each other to fulfill their needs when they please).
The woman has conditions which she will not reveal now. The main thing is that the new husband must “appreciate marriage life.”
The woman published her offer in the Saudi Arabic language magazine Roa, which and said she encouraged potential suitors to apply by e-mail or fax.
Applicants should provide their contact number so the woman will contact them in case she agrees on the marriage,” the magazine said.
It quoted the woman as saying:”It does not matter whether the new husband is attracted to my money as the most important thing is that he must appreciate marriage life and marital duties … I am even ready to accept a misyar marriage and pay him SR5 million at once … he will live with me in my villa and must accept all my conditions which I will reveal to him later.”
The magazine said the woman was married before but that she divorced her husband because he “was greedy and wanted only money.I made the wrong choice first time … I want to make the right choice now … my main obsession now is to marry … I am desperate to marry,” the woman said.
Misyar is permitted in Saudi Arabia and under Islam, though, misyar is not popular with many who see it as legalized prostitution.Women lose nearly all their rights in a misyar marriage and nearly 80 percent of misyar relationships end in divorce. There has been no follow up on the reply at press time.Hmmmm......Can Jewish people apply?Read the full story here.

Video: IDF officer strikes activist with M-16 rifle.

IDF officer strikes activist with M-16 rifle.(YNet).Palestinians and leftist activists are claiming that a high-ranking IDF officer beat a foreign activist with his weapon in an incident documented in a youtube video. The IDF Spokesperson's Unit described the incident as "serious" and noted that a full and thorough investigation had been ordered. According to the activists, the event took place on Saturday when a group of Palestinians and left-wing activists were riding bicycles together in the Jordan Valley. They claimed that the IDF had prevented them from traveling on Route 90 and that the ride was in protest of the ban. According to the activists, some 20 minutes into the ride, they were stopped by an IDF force. They claim they had tried to resume the ride in a non-violent manner but were assaulted by the soldiers. At this point, the video shows an IDF officer, a lieutenant-colonel, striking one of the activists once with an M-16 rifle. Three activists were taken to hospital following the incident. One of the activists, who took part in the bicycle ride, said that the victim is a Danish citizen and that he had required stitches in his lip. She added that they were riding on Route 90 to protest the movement limitations and general harassment of Palestinians traveling on the road. She noted that the IDF officer seen beating the activist was the "most violent figure in the scene as well as the commanding force." A Palestinian woman and a Dutch activist were also injured in the incident, she said. The IDF Spokesperson's unit said in response the event was very serious and that the Central Command chief had ordered a thorough investigation. "The inquiry will examine the circumstances which led to the incident documented in the video. Lessons will be drawn and the necessary steps will be taken." Hmmmm......I've seen US police forces taking on protesters in a lot more violent ways.Read the full story here.

Is it Contagious? Hillary Clinton went to party at La Havana, Cartagena.

Is it Contagious? Hillary Clinton went to party at La Havana, Cartagena.(Eluniversal). (GoogleTranslate).Rumba Cartagena spread up to the most Principals and occupied the world. In case anyone doubted it, late Saturday confirmed the second highest government official in the United States, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who for those things fun, and perhaps more challenging, she did nothing less than the bar Havana and Cuban music. In these five years, Mrs. Clinton is the most famous visitor to have attended. She arrived at 12.45 at night between Saturday and Sunday, at the very time when African Brass band, the music group that performs all night is different Cuban rhythms and delight in the act to no more than a hundred people crowded the bar.
A few hours earlier had called Aimone to reserve a table for a special character, which I did not know exactly who he was, but that was careful to put a sign of "Busy" on the only table available at that time remained at the bar, right next to where it meets the Charanga. Shortly thereafter, all present were shaken his night when he realized who had arrived. Differently than it has been seen on the streets and public places where it has been, Clinton at the bar was less guarded, he was accompanied by a small group of bodyguards and, yes, more than a dozen friends to share. Secretary Clinton immediately flew into a son montuno, the pachanga and danzones interpreting by the 11 musicians of the group led by Master Felix Cano, a Carthaginian who founded it in 1999 but for unknown seems Cuban that his emotion and simplicity make the audience feel they were in Havana for Fidel and Raul Castro.A dozen beers, two glasses of whiskey and bottles of water came to the table of the illustrious visitor. When the toast she took three sips of Eagle and then continued with the water bottle, which was served just before get up and dance "I lost my wallet" by Junior Gonzalez and Larry Harlow, after which followed in the track, the rhythm of "Island of Enchantment", Hector Lavoe and "A Killing" Fajardo y sus Estrellas. Amid the rumba Hillary also took time to congratulate the musicians, to whom they passed and shook hands with each one, yes accompanied on either side of two bodyguards not lost even the slightest moment of their movements. At quarter past one Clinton ended the rumba in Havana. She returned to the streets of Cartagena, Colombia, and through these routes, more alone than ever, the security provisions that prevent the passage of cars, the U.S. official sought his hotel to rest, thinking of closing the Summit of the Americas Sunday. Inside the bar were the other rumba, including a group of reporters and photographers at that time rested from the long hours they have imposed on the sixth Summit of the Americas. This time the break was interrupted them to return to work behind Mrs. Clinton, including photographic equipment provided, just for a couple of young foreigners, one American, who was not so surprised to see his Secretary of State but knowing that professional photographers do not carry camera.Hmmmmm......."Let's Move together"?Read the full story here, for more pictures see original Here.

"Feeding the Crocodile" - Al-Qaeda-allied group al-Shabaab executed US-born jihadist Omar Hammami.

"Feeding the Crocodile" - Al-Qaeda-allied group al-Shabaab executed US-born jihadist Omar Hammami.(SomalilandSun).The al-Qaeda-allied group al-Shabaab executed US-born jihadist Omar Hammami on April 5th, according to unconfirmed Somali media reports. Hammami, known as Abu Mansour al-Amriki, said he feared for his life from other al-Shabaab leaders because of strategic and ideological differences in a statement released last month. According to Somalia's Gedo Online, Hammami was the only one absent from a recent meeting attended by top al-Shabaab leaders in Baraawe. Al-Shabaab reportedly hunted down Hammami after he left Marka in the Lower Shabelle region. He was reportedly beheaded on the spot and buried somewhere between Marka and Baraawe. According to the report, the alleged execution angered some al-Shabaab leaders, who accused al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane of ordering the execution. A group of foreign fighters and other top al-Shabaab members, including Fuad Mohamed Khalaf, also known as Fuad Shongoole, reportedly fled to the Galgala Mountains following the news of the execution. Other leaders who left upon hearing the news include Hassan Dahir Aweys and Mukhtar Robow, Gedo Online reported. Aweys recently accused other al-Shabaab leaders, including Godane, of shedding the blood of Muslims and murdering innocent civilians in the name of Islam. He described the actions of al-Shabaab's leaders as far removed from Islam. Somali analysts say the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Shabaab group is on the verge of splintering due to deepening internal divisions exacerbated by recent military setbacks.Hmmmm.....An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last. ~ Sir Winston Churchill.Read the full story here.

Islamic 'Adult Breastfeeding' Fatwas Return.

Islamic 'Adult Breastfeeding' Fatwas Return.(MidleEastForum).By Raymond Ibrahim. Jihad Watch.April 12, 2012.Back in May 2007, Dr. Izzat Atiya, head of Al Azhar University's Department of Hadith, issued a fatwa, or Islamic legal decree, saying that female workers should "breastfeed" their male co-workers in order to work in each other's company. According to the BBC:
He said that if a woman fed a male colleague "directly from her breast" at least five times they would establish a family bond and thus be allowed to be alone together at work. "Breast feeding an adult puts an end to the problem of the private meeting, and does not ban marriage," he ruled. "A woman at work can take off the veil or reveal her hair in front of someone whom she breastfed."
Atiya based his fatwa on a hadith—a documented saying or doing of Islam's prophet Muhammad and subsequently one of Sharia law's sources of jurisprudence. Many Egyptians naturally protested this decree—hadith or no hadith—though no one could really demonstrate how it was un-Islamic; for the fatwa conformed to the strictures of Islamic jurisprudence. Still, due to the protests—not many Egyptian women were eager to "breastfeed" their male coworkers—the fatwa receded, and that was that. However, because it was never truly rebutted, it kept making comebacks.
For instance, three years later in 2010, a high-ranking Saudi, Sheikh Abdul Mohsin al-Abaican issued a fatwa confirming that "women could give their milk to men to establish a degree of maternal relations and get around a strict religious ban on mixing between unrelated men and women." But unlike Atiya's fatwa, "the man should take the milk, but not directly from the breast of the woman. He should drink it [from a cup] and then [he] becomes a relative of the family, a fact that allows him to come in contact with the women without breaking Islam's rules about mixing."
Now, a report titled "Kuwaiti Activists: Husband Breastfeeding from Wife not Prohibited," published earlier this month by Arabic RT (see also Garaa News) opens by announcing that "The adult breastfeeding fatwa has returned once again to the spotlight, after Kuwaiti Islamic activists supported the adult breastfeeding fatwa issued by the Egyptian Salafi, Sheikh Jamal al-Murakbi [different from Al Azhar's Sheikh Atiya]. This time around, the Kuwaitis examined the adult breastfeeding fatwa in the context of relations between a man and his wife."
While the Kuwaiti sheikhs all essentially agree that the activity is not strictly forbidden according to Sharia—only "disliked" (literally makruh)—they are divided over the particulars:
  • Sheikh Nazim Misbahi, head of the Fatwa Committee of the Islamic Heritage Revival Society in Kuwait, supports the decree, agreeing that "it is not forbidden [haram] for a man to breastfeed from his wife."
  • Sheikh Bassam al-Shatti, a Sharia professor, specifies: "If the husband deliberately sucks to obtain milk from the breast of his wife, this is forbidden; however, if it happens unintentionally during foreplay with his wife, then there is no problem—though it is disliked according to the four schools" of Sharia.
  • Sheikh Sa'd al-Anzi stressed that "if the man, while being intimate with his wife, sucks her nipples, it is nothing, considered foreplay; but if the milk reaches his mouth, he should spit out—even if goes down in his stomach," i.e., vomit.
Consider for a moment the significance of these Islamic edicts: whether women "breastfeeding" coworkers (Egyptian fatwa, 2007), whether men drinking female breast-milk in a cup (Saudi fatwa, 2010), or whether Kuwaiti minutiae concerning bedroom foreplay—all these fatwas are reminders of the inescapable strictures of Sharia law; while these sheikhs offers various circumstances and interpretations concerning "adult breastfeeding," they are all confined to the words of the prophet of Islam.
This is precisely why, despite all the claims that Islam is perpetually being "misunderstood"—by terrorists, by "Islamophobes"—understanding what Islam commands and forbids is actually quite a simple matter: along with the Koran, determine what the prophet said in canonical hadiths.
It is, after all, no coincidence that the above mentioned Kuwaitis, like Sheikh Misbahi, were members of the delegation that recently went to ask Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti about Islam's position on churches in the Arabian Peninsula: the same source that compelled the Grand Mufti to declare that all churches must be destroyed, is the same source that advocates "adult breastfeeding": Muhammad and his teachings. All very straightforward, really.

Iranian Negotiator Dismisses Suspension of Iran's Nuclear Activities.

Iranian Negotiator Dismisses Suspension of Iran's Nuclear Activities.(Fars).Tehran - Tehran's chief negotiator in the talks with the six world powers dismissed suspension of Iran's nuclear activities as impossible, saying that the plan to withdraw sanctions in return for a suspension of Iran's nuclear activities belongs to the past. Speaking to reporters after two rounds of talks with the six world powers in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday, Jalili rejected a suspension of Iran's 20-percent uranium enrichment, and said, "We embark on providing for our needs on the basis of our rights and within the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)." He said raising such plans as "suspending Iran's nuclear activities in return for the removal of sanctions is a literature which belongs to the past". Asked if the six world powers showed flexibility in the Saturday talks, the Iranian negotiator stated, "The attitude that we observed was talks for cooperation and we consider it as to be positive." He described the Saturday negotiations as "progressive" compared with the last two rounds of talks, and said that "the opposite side had entered the talks with a positive attitude towards cooperation, and I believe that Mrs. Ashton's role is remarkable" in this regard. The last meeting between the two sides took place in Istanbul in January 2011. Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain and France plus Germany) had also held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010. Jalili said the world powers had replaced their confrontation approach with an approach based on talks and cooperation in the Saturday talks in Istanbul. Jalili and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton chaired the two sides' delegations in the negotiations. Both sides voiced satisfaction with the talks and agreed to meet in Baghdad on May 23 to continue negotiations.Jalili and Ashton's deputies, Ali Baqeri and Helga Schmid, are due to draft an agreement on mutual cooperation prior to the Baghdad meeting. Jalili said cooperation would cover a wide range of issues in various fields, "and nuclear cooperation will be just one of them". Read the full story here.

Turkish President Abdullah Gül calls Freedom Party leader Wilders islamophobe.

Turkish President Abdullah Gül calls Freedom Party leader Wilders islamophobe.(Expatia).In an interview with Dutch mass-circulation daily De Telegraaf, President Gül said Mr Wilders represents an extreme voice, which feeds radicals.” He continued, saying because of Wilders “a negative us-against-them climate is developing in the whole of Europe, which is laying the foundation for ethnic religious discrimination.” Nevertheless, the president said he would shake the hand of the leader of the anti-Islam party if he met him. President Gül is in the Netherlands on a three-day trip in the coming week to mark 400 years of relations between Turkey and the Netherlands at the invitation of the Dutch government. A number of months ago, Mr Wilders said President Gül was not welcome in the Netherlands as far as he was concerned. In 2010, Turkey decided not to receive a parliamentary delegation which included Wilders. At the time, a Turkish spokesperson said that Wilders was “such a fascist that besides in Turkey, he would not be welcome in other European capitals.” In response, Geert Wilders has indicated that President Gül’s comments do not bother him. “Turkish humour: Christian-teaser, Kurd-basher, Hamas-friend and Islamist Gül complaining about tolerance.” Read the full story here.

Fly-in Pro-Palestinian activists instructed to protest at int'l airports, told not to start riots.

Fly-in Pro-Palestinian activists instructed to protest at int'l airports, told not to start riots.(YNet).The pro-Palestinian "flytilla" may well prove to be much smaller than planned, as many activists were banned from boarding flights to Israel on Saturday. The largest group of activists was meant to arrive from France. They were instructed to arrive at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris at 5 am on Sunday. Should they be barred from boarding the flights, the activists will express their protest in letters to the media. On Saturday, organizers briefed the activists on social media networks, calling them to challenge the airlines and show up at the airports with their tickets. The message stated that the blockade was a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and that Israel had turned Palestine into a huge prison. It was also noted that Israeli immigration inspectors from the Oz Unit have decided to stop their strike in wake of the fly-in. The activists were given specific instructions on how to act in case Israeli authorities refuse to allow them in. They were instructed to leave a copy of their passport with relatives and take the numbers of government officials from their countries of origin. They were also briefed on Israeli airport rules and guidelines. Organizers asked the activists to "stay calm but determined" in case they are denied entry and that there is a possibility they will eventually be allowed in. The activists were also instructed not to start riots or insult airport officials. They plan to appeal any decision barring them from Israel with the involvement of a lawyer. They were also told to contact the organizers in order to report to the media the developments at the airport. Organizers stressed the importance of the media in pressuring the Israeli authorities into changing their decision. Once in Israel, they will receive a letter from the Israeli government which reads: "You could have chosen to protest Syrian regime's daily savagery, but instead you chose to protest against Israel, the Middle East's sole democracy."See below.Read the full story here.

Turkish Pianist Faces Prison For 'Blasphemous' Tweets.

Turkish Pianist Faces Prison For 'Blasphemous' Tweets.(WAS).Turkish pianist is facing prison time for anti-Muslim tweets, raising questions over the state of religious and Internet freedoms in less than secular countries. Fazil Say, a virtuoso pianist and composer, faces an investigation over tweeting remarks considered offensive to Muslims, Christians and Jews. Say used Twitter to question whether Islamic heaven is like a brothel or a pub, citing Qu'ranic verses that describe rivers of drinks and beautiful women for those admitted to paradise.
He also tweeted about a muezzin who recited the evening call to prayer in under 30 seconds, surmising the religious man was either impatient to see his lover or get drunk on a beverage called raki.
Say may have been joking about his disregard for religion, but Turkey's authorities are not laughing. As Turkish Penal Code specifies, "Anyone who openly denigrates the religious values of a part of the population shall be sentenced to imprisonment of from six months to one year, where the act is sufficient to breach public peace."
Say's case is still pending and he may escape with only fines, but other social media dissenters in countries with strict religious rules have not been so lucky. In Syria, Palestine and Jordan, for example, "Many cases of arrests are reported based on declarations on social media networks," according to Ayman Mhanna, director of the SKeyes center for media and cultural freedom in the Middle East. In such cases, Mhanna observes, "judicial authorities haven't shown much leniency to 'unorthodox' messages." This is true in Kuwait, where writer Mohammed Al-Mulaifi just sentenced to seven years' hard labor in prison for allegedly slandering Shi'ites on his Twitter account.
Two Tunisians face a similar sentence for posting "blasphemous" content online, while a 23-year-old in Jeddha endured death threats this February amid a public outcry over his tweets about the Prophet.
Hamza Kashgari, a Saudi citizen who fled to Malaysia after tweeting against religion, was recently extradited and awaits a possible death penalty for his actions.
And even Egyptian telecom magnate Naguib Sawiris faces a trial for tweeting a picture of Mickey and Minnie Mouse clad in Islamic garb. He intended to joke that even cartoon characters will have to wear the veil if Islamists take power.
Still, not all Islamic countries prohibit anti-religious remarks on social media sites, as Afghanis proved with their recent outcry against the country's top religious council. After authorities in that country suggested men and women remain separated at school and work for religious reasons, angry women took to Facebook and Twitter labeling the statement "outrageous" and demanding, "How dare the religious council decide about our faith?" But Afghanistan appears to be the exception among non-secular countries in allowing online opposition to religion. Most religiously-influenced governments appear to view social media posts against the establishment as utterly unacceptable.Read the full story here.

"The Never Ending Story".....The Talks With Iran.

"The Never Ending Story".....The Talks With Iran.(PP).By Elliott Abrams.Happy talk is one of the great concerns we should all have about the talks with Iran in Istanbul, which just concluded with an agreement to meet again on May 23 in Baghdad. What happened in Istanbul? Judging from the account in The New York Times, not much. The EU’s Lady Ashton says the talks were “useful and constructive,” but there is no real reason to believe this.
The Times continues: The decision to meet again appeared to reflect what European and American officials saw as a serious commitment from Iran to negotiate. However the initial statements from the delegates after the talks ended did not suggest that any concrete proposals or confidence-building measures had been made or agreed to. Right. In fact, the problem is made even more obvious in this comment: “I don’t think they would come if they weren’t serious,” one Western diplomat said.
Really? Looking back on all the negotiations with the North Koreans, including those of the Obama administration (and those led in the Clinton administration by Under Secretary of State Sherman, who also led the U.S. delegation in Istanbul), would we judge that the North Koreans “wouldn’t have come if they weren’t serious?” Serious about what, one might ask? About delaying a possible Israeli military strike, or about negotiating an end to their own nuclear program?
The fact that there appear to have been no concrete proposals discussed, yet the next meeting is delayed now for five weeks, suggests skepticism about Iranian “seriousness.”
The late May meeting will be in Baghdad, because that is where Iran wants it to take place. What will happen there? It is hard to know what the Iranians make of all this, except perhaps that diplomacy is fun.
Note that the head of the U.S. delegation, Wendy Sherman, requested a private one-on-one meeting with the head of the Iranian delegation. As I write this, there are conflicting reports as to whether her request was accepted or rejected, but all accounts are very clear on one point: she was the one asking, not Saeed Jalili. This action ensures that the United States appears to Iran as a suitor, anxious for these talks to succeed– and apparently more anxious than is Iran. It will take a few days and more leaks to find out what transpired in Istanbul. Perhaps there is reason to be hopeful, but from what we can see today that depends on what you are hoping for: stopping Israel, or stopping Iran’s nuclear program Hmmmm.........All this 'talk' is just a waste of time, obama has no intention of stopping Iran, it wouldn't surprise me if Erdogan told Mahmoud 'we' (The Obama admin) will in the end ask for the removal of all nuclear weapons in the Midle East, including the ones of Israel.......just wait till i'm more flexible!Read the full story here.

Did you hear the one of the hooker and the Secret Service man?

Did you hear the one of the hooker and the Secret Service man?(NYDN).The dozen Secret Service agents sent home after a prostitution scandal in Colombia were busted after at least one of them refused to pay one of the hookers, sources said. The scandal — a black eye for the United States’ reputation abroad — was revealed Friday just hours before President Obama arrived in Cartagena for the Summit of the Americas.
The 12 agents were part of an advance team assigned to secure a local hotel before the summit began, yet their attention apparently turned to taking advantage of Colombia’s policy of legal prostitution.Five American service members were also accused of misconduct stemming from the scandalous incident at the hotel, according to the U.S. military. “They had arranged to have a bunch of prostitutes come by and one of the agents refused to pay a prostitute,” said author Ronald Kessler, one of the leading experts on the Secret Service. “Yes, doubly good judgment there.” Kessler, who was briefed on the investigation by his sources within the agency, told the Daily News Saturday that the spurned hooker told police about the lack of payment. The 12 agents were immediately recalled to Washington. “Their careers are over,” said Kessler. “Number one, it is against basic ethics to go to a prostitute,” he continued. “Number two, it is incredibly embarrassing to the White House.” “And number three,” he continued. “It could leave them open to blackmail and a possible assassination attempt.”
Obama still has “full confidence” in the Secret Service, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney, who declared late Saturday that the incident “has been more of a distraction for the press” than the President. Kessler said two of the agents were supervisors who attempted to cover up the mortifying incident.Details of the incident remain murky, but U.S. officials believe one agent took a woman back to his room Wednesday night and threw her out in a dispute over money.
The woman caused a commotion in the hallway, getting the attention of local cops and other Secret Service agents, a senior official told The New York Times. During the initial investigation, it emerged that other agents also had women in their rooms. Rep. Peter King (R-LI), the head of the House Homeland Security committee, said they were all “presumed” to be prostitutes. Though it was known if all 12 member of the Secret Service team are suspected of wrongdoing, they were all recalled as part of the investigation. Several of the agents are married, according to reports. The President, who had a full day of summit events Saturday, has not addressed the Secret Service scandal. He is not staying at the Hotel Caribe. The Secret Service did not elaborate on the allegations Saturday. The night before, the agency — which is charged with protecting the President — simply confirmed that the officers were pulled back to Washington.Hmmmmm......."Let's Move together"?Read the full story here.More here.

Update: Military: Five U.S. service members in Colombia may have been involved in inappropriate conduct.(Pol).Five members of the U.S. military stationed in Colombia violated curfew and may have been involved in inappropriate conduct at the same hotel as the 12 Secret Service agents involved in the unfolding prostitution scandal, the United States Southern Command announced Saturday. USSOUTHCOM commander Gen. Douglas Fraser said that he is "disappointed by the entire incident and that this behavior is not in keeping with the professional standards expected of members of the United States military."Hmmmm.....Sounds more and more like a 'Group Activity' if you ask me.:)

"Time is on my side" - Iran nuclear talks constructive, will meet end May: EU envoy.(HD).The EU foreign policy chief says the latest nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers have been constructive and that the two sides will meet again in Baghdad on May 23. Catherine Ashton says future talks will be guided by the "principle of a step-by-step approach and reciprocity." That indicates the international community is ready to reward Iran if it reduces fears that it may use its atomic program to make weapons. She also said after the talks in Istanbul on Saturday that Iran has a right to a peaceful nuclear program. At the same time, she says the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty must be the "key basis" for future talks.Hmmmm......"Time....is on my side, yes it is, so is Obama and Erdogan?"Read the full story here.

The watches for Today's Muslims - Traveling backwards in time has suddenly a 'whole new meaning'.(Tribune).ISLAMABAD: Wrist watches are all about making a statement. And a unique watch always catches the eye of those on the prowl for a new accessory. The makers of the Sa’at-a watch that looks like time is moving backward but is, in reality, moving forward-hope to provide enthusiasts with a new option. The watch works on an Islamic concept whereby it looks like a normal wrist watch but its arms move from right to left, with a corresponding dial. “It’s about wearing a concept and not just an accessory,” said Masood Khan, who is trying to make a market for the Sa’at Islamic Watch in Pakistan. Khan says the watch is a revolution in the industry, a technological breakthrough introduced by Palestinian scientist Yasin Al-Shouk who has been working on it for years. The “revolution” movement of the Sa’at Makkah watch offers a whole new perspective to its wearer, Khan added. The right to left movement mirrors the direction pilgrims move as they perambulate the Kaaba or Arabic text. “Your eye will get used to it in a few hours or a few minutes, if you already read Arabic from right to left,” he said of acclimatising to the functions of the watch. Khan said, all models of the Sa’at Makkah collection display a representation of the Kaaba. The watch had its official launch in Kuwait in November last year and was awarded a gold medal for the best innovation of 2011 at the International Watch Exhibition. After its successful launch in the Arab world, Khan said that the watch is now targeting the wider Muslim world. “This is not merely a piece of jewellery but marks one’s affinity towards a specific religion,” said Khan.Hmmmm.....Can't wait for CAIR to sue employers who fire Muslims who arrived late at work.Read the full story here.

Pal Legislative Council dep speaker Dr. A. Bahar Calls on Resistance Factions to Form 'Resistance Committee' for Kidnapping Israeli Soldiers for Palestinian Prisoner Swaps.(TAZ).Hamas called Monday upon all Palestinian militant groups to form a joint committee to plan ways to kidnap Israeli soldiers who could then be exchanged for Palestinians held in Israeli jails DPA reported All militias should join this "factional resistance committee," said Ahmed Bahar, a senior leader of the Islamist group currently administering the Gaza Strip. He told reporters, at a news briefing to launch activities expressing solidarity with prisoners in Israeli jails, that kidnapping soldiers would "oblige the occupation (Israel) to release our prisoners." Bahar also called on security officials in the Palestinian Authority-run West Bank to stop releasing Israel soldiers and civilians who lose their way and stray into Palestinian areas by mistake. The West Bank sends them back to Israel. Israel currently holds more than 4,200 Palestinian prisoners in its jails, most of them incarcerated for "security offences" such as attacking Israel or plotting to do so. In October and December last year, Israel released a total of 1,027 prisoners from its jails in exchange for soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been snatched in a Hamas-led cross-border raid in June 2006 and held in Gaza as a bargaining chip.Hmmmm......The people paid by the U.S taxpayers thanks to the Obama admin and Hilary Clinton.Read the full story here.

'Gulf states plan to meet over UAE-Iran of Abu Mousa island row'.

'Gulf states plan to meet over UAE-Iran of Abu Mousa island row'.(Jpost).DUBAI - Gulf Arab states plan to meet next week to discuss a dispute between the United Arab Emirates and Iran which broke out after the Iranian president visited a Gulf island claimed by both countries, a source familiar with the matter said on Saturday. Wednesday's meeting of foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council will be held in the Saudi capital Riyadh, the source told Reuters. "This will be an extraordinary meeting which was called for by the UAE following Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit," the source added.
The UAE has recalled its ambassador to Tehran for consultations after what it called a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty, the state news agency WAM reported. Iranian state media said Ahmadinejad visited Abu Musa island, some 60 km off the UAE, on Wednesday as part of a tour of Iran's Gulf coast. Both countries claim Abu Musa and two other small islands, located near key shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf. The islands have been held by Iran since 1971, shortly before the seven Gulf emirates gained full independence from Britain and formed the UAE. Ahmadinejad's visit "is a flagrant violation of the United Arab Emirates' sovereignty over its territory and a transgression of efforts to find a peaceful settlement to end Iranian occupation of the three UAE islands," UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan was quoted as saying by WAM on Wednesday. Abdullatif al-Zayani, head of the GCC - a regional bloc grouping the six Gulf Arab states - condemned the visit as "provocative" and a violation of UAE sovereignty. The UAE also cancelled a friendly match with Iran's national soccer team, due to be held on Tuesday in the Gulf Arab state. Iran rejected the protests and said Ahmadinejad's visit was an "internal Iranian matter". Tehran said it was determined to improve bilateral ties and was ready for a dialogue with the UAE to resolve "possible misunderstandings." The UAE has urged Tehran to agree to take the dispute to the International Court of Justice in The Hague or to hold direct negotiations. Iran says its sovereignty over the islands is not negotiable but has called for talks with the UAE to clear up "misunderstandings."Read the full story here.

The White House - Muslim Brotherhood "Tea Parties" meeting place?

The White House - Muslim Brotherhood "Tea Parties" meeting place?(Investors) Via: DocsTalk.
Homeland Security: President Obama promised lobbyists wouldn't run his White House. They're just doing it from across the street — at a Shariah-compliant coffee chain tied to a radical jihadist group. That's right: According to the New York Times, prominent K Street lobbyists are buttonholing Obama officials at a Caribou Coffee shop on Pennsylvania Avenue, raising far more than just ethics questions. What the Times story neglects to mention is that Caribou Coffee is a Shariah-compliant firm owned by an Islamic bank based in Bahrain. One of its founders and a current adviser are leaders in the radical Muslim Brotherhood.
According to the FBI, the Egypt-based, Saudi-funded Brotherhood has a plan to infiltrate, "sabotage" and "destroy" the U.S. "from within."
And it's using American agents and front groups to carry out that espionage. The off-site White House meetings at Caribou also raise national security concerns. Because they're not taking place at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., they're not subject to disclosure on White House visitors logs. And there's no Secret Service present — at a shop owned and controlled by a foreign entity hostile to U.S. interests. A key principal in the 2000 deal by First Islamic Bank of Bahrain to buy Caribou Coffee was Yusuf al-Qaradawi — spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, and a known jihadist and open supporter of suicide bombings, including some targeting Americans.
The Islamic cleric has been banned from entering the U.S. due to his fatwahs calling for the killing of American troops, and his leadership in a charity blacklisted by Treasury as a terror group. Al-Qaradawi has ruled that jihad can be an offensive means of expanding the Muslim state, plus a defensive response to attack. Referring to the infidel, he added, "If you kill him he will end up in hell, and if he kills you, you become a martyr." First Islamic Bank changed its name and removed al-Qaradawi's name from its Web site after anti-jihad watchdogs exposed the connection. But Caribou's parent still lists another major Brotherhood figure as a member of its Shariah Supervisory Board. It calls Muhammad Taqi Usmani a "prominent scholar" with a "proven track record in the practical implementation of Shariah law." Usmani also has a proven track record of advocating aggressive jihad against infidels. Fiercely anti-American, he has urged all Muslims to support the Taliban as they continue to ambush and kill U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Dow Jones recently dumped Usmani as an adviser to its Islamic index. News of these White House meetings at an Islamist-controlled chain comes as Obama has appointed a Muslim lawyer promoting Shariah finance as a White House fellow. We need more transparency regarding who's getting into the White House, who's lobbying it and who owns the off-site spots where they're conducting official White House business. The FBI should be there too.Hmmmm........Huma Abedin.....Hassan Abedin ....Sheikh Youssef Qaradawi.......Hillary Clinton........Taliban release from Guantanamo?Read the full story here.

South Sudan troops 'repel oil town attack'.

South Sudan troops 'repel oil town attack'.(AlJazeera).South Sudan says its soldiers have retained control of a key town in the oil-producing border region of Heglig despite clashes with Sudanese forces. Philip Aguer, a spokesman for South Sudan's military, known as the SPLA, said on Saturday there had been overnight clashes in Kelet, a village about 40kms from Heglig town. "Yesterday, there were clashes between their patrols and SPLA. ... SPLA has destroyed two tanks belonging to the SAF," Colonel Aguer said. South Sudanese forces seized control of Heglig town earlier in the week during the worst fighting in the region since the South seceded from Khartoum's rule last year. South Sudan's information minister also said Sudanese efforts to regain Heglig had been repelled. "They tried to attack our positions north of Heglig last night but it was contained," said Barnaba Marial Benjamin. "Heglig is (still) under our control." Aguer said Sudan's air force bombed the border areas of Jau and Panakuach, in northern South Sudan's Unity State, on Saturday, as well as Heglig, the main producer of Khartoum's oil.
No information was available early on Saturday on the positions of the two armies. A Unity State government spokesperson, reached by telephone in the state capital Bentiu, confirmed the aerial bombings near the border. "The areas in the north of Unity State are still subject to Antonovs (planes)," said the spokesperson, Gideon Gatfan. "We don't have the updates yet between Heglig and Kelet, but all those areas they are subjected to bombing."
On Friday, Al Jazeera's Nazanine Moshiri, reporting from Juba, the capital of South Sudan, said a spokesperson there had told her Sudanese forces were about 30kms from Heglig and that South Sudanese would defend themselves if they attempted to take back the town. "This could end up becoming a full-blown conflict," our correspondent said. World powers and the United Nations have urged restraint after the latest round of heavy fighting that broke out on Tuesday. The African Union denounced the South's occupation of Heglig as illegal and urged the two sides to avert a "disastrous" war.Read and see (video) the full story here.

video "You got Skunked" - Israel fights Palestinian Protesters With Non Leathal Weapon "Skunk Water".

"You got Skunked" - It was not the most dramatic sight in the world. The water cannon first sent a few feeble streams of the green liquid into the air to test the wind direction. It looked like most went back towards the Israeli troops watching from the distance. Then it started sending the plumes of spray 45 degrees to the right of us, high into the air.
I watched it rain down on the protesters in front of me, took some pictures and stood back out of the way. Again and again it fired, but I was dry, safe and, I believed, smelling sweet.
And then it happened. It started with a drop of sweat on my nose, inside my tightly sealed gas mask. The sweat started a chain-reaction itch. I shook my head and even jumped up and down. This had to be dealt with, and quickly I thought. Walking away from the protesters, I gently slid my index finger through my mask’s seal in attempt to solve my dilemma by scratching my nose. Big mistake! It was, without doubt, one of the most horrible things I have ever smelled.
I can’t describe it without using expletives. But if you mixed dirty diapers with not so fresh road kill and left them all in the sun for a few days, you might get an idea. That half second scratch will last me a lifetime. And I wasn’t even hit with it. Despite changing my clothes by the car, and rinsing my exposed arms and face with water the stench was still there. It was on my boots, my cameras, my helmet and mask. I could smell it the whole ride home. I could think of nothing else. I thought about what I would say to the border police at the checkpoint if they searched my car. “No, I don’t have a rotting corpse in the trunk, I was just at a protest” Five days later, after countless washes and scrubs, I can still smell it. My cameras came out worst. I wanted to put them through the delicate cycle in my washing machine, but you just can’t do that. My gas mask went in the dishwasher, though, along with my helmet. Everything else that couldn’t be machine washed, has been coated over and over with disinfectant spray, to no avail. The trunk of my car still has a “serial killer” stench to it.Source.

Press TV - EU: Round one of Iran-P5+1 talks, constructive.

Press TV - EU: Round one of Iran-P5+1 talks, constructive. After the first round of comprehensive negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 - the US, Britain, France, China, Russia plus Germany - wrapped up in Istanbul, a European Union source says talks between the group and Iran were “constructive.”TEHRAN (FNA)- Negotiating teams from Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) wrapped up their first round of talks in Istanbul, Turkey Saturday afternoon. Delegations of Iran and the six world powers led by Iran's chief negotiator and Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Saeed Jalili and EU foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton ended their first round of talks at Istanbul's Lutfil Kirdar Hall at 13:30pm local time. According to FNA dispatches, the Iranian team will next have separate bilateral meetings with the delegations of the world powers and then attend the second round of multilateral negotiations in the evening. The two sides' negotiators started their talks at 11am local time. Jalili is leading the Iranian team of negotiators, while delegations of the six world powers are headed by Ashton. After a year of stalled talks, Iran and the G5+1 eventually accepted to resume their negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey, on April 14 and in case of good progress hold a second round of talks in Iraq's capital city, Baghdad. The last meeting between the two sides took place in Istanbul in January 2011. Iran and the G5+1 had also held two rounds of multifaceted talks in Geneva in December 2010. Member of the Iranian team of negotiators and Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Undersecretary Ali Baqeri informed yesterday that the talks between Tehran and the six world powers in Istanbul would last for one day. "The talks will be held in one day and will not continue for a second day," Baqeri told reporters in Istanbul Friday evening and after meeting the head of the Russian delegation to the talks Sergey Ryabkov at Iran's consulate office. Baqeri and the EU foreign policy deputy chief were in charge of discussions over the date and venue of the talks. On Friday and prior to his remarks to the reporters, Baqeri met with the heads of the Chinese and Russian delegations.Read the full story here and here.

Israel's Other Temple.Research Reveals Ancient Struggle over Holy Land Supremacy.

Israel's Other Temple.Research Reveals Ancient Struggle over Holy Land Supremacy.(Spiegel).By Matthias Schulz. The Jews had significant competition in antiquity when it came to worshipping Yahweh. Archeologists have discovered a second great temple not far from Jerusalem that predates its better known cousin. It belonged to the Samaritans, and may have been edited out of the Bible once the rivalry had been decided. Clad in gray coat, Aharon ben Ab-Chisda ben Yaacob, 85, is sitting in the dim light of his house. He strikes up a throaty chant, a litany in ancient Hebrew. He has a full beard and is wearing a red kippah on his head. The man is a high priest -- and his family tree goes back 132 generations. He says: "I am a direct descendent of Aaron, the brother of the prophet Moses" -- who lived perhaps over 3,000 years ago.
Ab-Chisda is the spiritual leader of the Samaritans, a sect that is so strict that its members are not even allowed to turn on the heat on the Sabbath. They never eat shrimp and only marry among themselves. Their women are said to be so impure during menstruation that they are secluded in special rooms for seven days. Outside, on the streets of Kiryat Luza, near Nablus, a cold wind is blowing. The village lies just below the summit of Mount Gerizim. There's a school, two shops and a site for sacrifices. This is home to 367 Samaritans. It's a small community.
Everyone here is required to attend religious services in the synagogue on Saturdays. "Every baby boy has to be circumcised precisely on the eighth day," says the high priest -- not beforehand, and not afterwards. Most important of all: the sect only believes in the written legacy of Moses, the five books of the Pentateuch, also commonly known as the Torah. They reject all other scripture from the Bible.
From a historical perspective, the Samaritans and the Jews have a common lineage. The Old Testament recounts that 10 of the 12 tribes in the region of Samaria founded the state of Israel in the year 926 BC. The two other clans lived farther south, in the mountainous region of Judah, with its capital Jerusalem (see map). In other words, the Samaritans were once in the majority. In ancient times, there were 300,000 of them -- perhaps even over a million. But their strictest law almost led to their downfall. It states: "None of you may settle outside the promised land."
As a result, while the Jews fled across the globe to escape the cruelty of foreign rulers, their relatives persevered in the land of their forefathers and suffered under Byzantine tyrants and merciless sultans. At the end of World War I, there were only 146 of them. "Today we are doing better," says Ab-Chisda cheerily, as he gazes out the window. Now, together with another group in Holon near Tel Aviv, this religious community consists of 751 individuals.
But this population increase only took place because they broke with age-old traditions and rescinded the ban against mixed marriages. In 2004, five Jewish women from Ukraine and one from Siberia, all of them ready and willing to get married, were accepted into the community. Nevertheless, due to inbreeding, they have a wide range of genetic defects. Trade journals have published studies on the forgotten children of God. They often suffer from muscle weakness and Usher syndrome, also known as deafblindness.
Stefan Schorch compares the Samaritan Torah with the Jewish version. "Actually there's only one main difference," he says. Among the Jews, Jerusalem is the world's religious epicenter, whereas for the Samaritans it's Mount Gerizim. But which Torah is the original?
Until recently, the generally accepted school of thought was as follows: In the fourth century BC, the Samaritans split off as a radical sect. In the Bible, they appear as outsiders and idol worshipers; they are evil.
The parable of the "good Samaritan" (Luke 10:25-37) offers a rather atypical portrayal of a member of this sect. The historian Titus Flavius Josephus, himself a Jew, mentions that the apostates erected a shrine "in all haste" in the year 330 BC, as a rather dilettantish attempt to emulate the Temple in Jerusalem. Increasingly, though, it looks as though the Bible has handed down a distorted picture of history.
Papyrus scrolls recovered from Qumran on the Dead Sea, as well as a fragment of the Bible that recently surfaced on the market for antiquities, necessitate a "complete reassessment," says Schorch. Yet the most exciting indication of how history actually transpired has now been unearthed by Yitzhak Magen. Working behind security fences, the archaeologist has been digging on the windswept summit of Mount Gerizim. His findings, which have only been partially published, are a virtual sensation: As early as 2,500 years ago, the mountain was already crowned with a huge, dazzling shrine, surrounded by a 96 by 98-meter (315 by 321-foot) enclosure. The wall had six-chamber gates with colossal wooden doors. At the time, the Temple of Jerusalem was, at most, but a simple structure.
Magen has discovered 400,000 bone remains from sacrificial animals. Inscriptions identify the site as the "House of the Lord." A silver ring is adorned with the tetragrammaton YHWH, which stands for Yahweh. All of this means that a vast, rival place of worship stood only 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Jerusalem.
It is an astonishing discovery. A religious war was raging among the Israelites, and the nation was divided. The Jews had powerful cousins who were competing with them for religious leadership in the Holy Land. The dispute revolved around a central question: Which location deserved the honor of being the hearth and burnt offering site of God Almighty? Researchers have a long way to go before they uncover all the details of this conflict. It's clear, however, that it was extremely acrimonious.
Each side reviled the other. There was murder, mayhem and, ultimately, even the Holy Scripture was revised. At first -- so much is clear -- the Samaritans had the upper hand.
Indeed, compared with Jerusalem, Mount Gerizim enjoyed significantly older rights: In the great tale of the history of the chosen people, the mountain plays a key role.
Abraham, the progenitor of the Israelites -- who, according to legend, roamed through the Orient as a shepherd around 1500 BC -- stopped there because God had appeared to him in a wondrous vision. Later, Jacob the patriarch traveled there to build the original shrine. In the fifth book of Moses, the mountain summit finally earns a prominent place in biblical history: After the flight from Egypt, the Israelites wandered through the Sinai desert for 40 years. At last, they reached the Jordan River from the east. Their old and weary leader gazed across the river to the promised land, where "milk and honey flow." Shortly before his death, Moses issued an important command: The people must first travel to Mount Gerizim. He said that six tribes should climb it and proclaim blessings, while the other six tribes should proclaim curses from the top of nearby Mount Ebal.
It was a kind of ritual taking of possession of the promised land. Finally, the prophet tells the Israelites to build a shrine "made of stones" on Mount Gerizim and coat it with "plaster." Indeed, he said, this is "the place that the Lord has chosen." That, in any case, is what stands in the oldest Bible texts. They are brittle papyrus scrolls that were made over 2,000 years ago in Qumran, and have only recently been examined by experts.
In the Hebrew Bible, which Jerusalem's priests probably spent a good deal of time revising, everything suddenly sounds quite different. There is no longer any mention of a "chosen place." The word "Gerizim" has also been removed from the crucial passage. Instead, the text states that the Yahweh altar was erected on "Ebal." "By naming the mountain of the curses," says Schorch, "they wanted to cast the entire tale in a negative light, and deprive Gerizim of its biblical legitimacy." Schorch dates the intervention to around 150 BC.
The researcher stops short of calling it fraud, though, preferring to label it an "adaptation of the Bible to their own religious view."
But why was this ruse ultimately successful? Why did the minority win out? Didn't the opponent have the more populous country? A palace already stood in their capital city, Samaria, in the year 1000 BC. Ivory has been found there. At the time, Jerusalem was still little more than a village, with barely 1,500 inhabitants. Researchers have solved this puzzle, and the answer even has a face: It sports a curly beard and wears a bronze helmet. Starting in the year 732 BC, the Assyrians used their chariots to advance to the Mediterranean and subjugate the state of Israel. The inhabitants were either impaled or taken into captivity. This devastated the country. The land of the Lord had been overrun by violent hordes. Many fled to their cousins in Judah. Jerusalem's population soared to 15,000.
Around the year 180 BC, the ceremonial building grew to a size of roughly 200 by 200 meters. The Samaritans added a monumental staircase and rooms for "thousands of pilgrims." There were apparently huge crowds of devout visitors. None of this is mentioned in the Bible.
The dispute finally came to a head. In the year 128 BC, John Hyrcanos, a Jewish prince, ascended Mount Gerizim with an army and burned the proud sanctuary to the ground. Archaeologists have found a "burn layer" along with arrow heads, swords, daggers and lead missiles for slings. The Samaritans never rebuilt their temple. From then on, the victors wrote the (biblical) history books and forced their rivals into oblivion. And yet the "guardians of the law," as they call themselves, still exist today.
When Mark Twain visited the region in 1867, he encountered the "sad, proud remnant of a once mighty community," which he stared at "just as one would stare at a living mastodon." Today, this astounding religious community is better off. They have a seat in the Palestinian parliament and they maintain contacts with the United Nations. "We want to live in peace with everyone," says the high priest Ab-Chisda. Despite their tragic history, the spiritual leader has not lost his sense of humor. In response to the question as to what the Samaritan paradise looks like, the old man hesitated briefly. Then, he said mischievously: "It must be a wonderful place.
