  • Obama visits a nation that knew him as Barry. The two houses where he spent part of his boyhood stand pretty much the way they did when he went back to Hawaii four decades ago. The two schools he attended have grown larger but, in spirit, remain unchanged. Some of his old friends can still be found around the neighborhood. In Mr Satjakoesoemah's living room, Mr Obama's mother taught English to the neighborhood women, including his wife, Djumiati. While the residents regarded Mr Obama's mother as a "free spirit," Barry, who was chubby, was referred to as the "boy who runs like a duck," said Mrs Satjakoesoemah, 69.Though most of the Menteng school's students have always been Muslim, Rully Dasaad, 49, a former classmate, chuckled at the idea that of all schools in the country, Menteng was equated with a madrasa.Mr Obama's family rented the guest house inside a compound belonging to a prominent physician. There, according to the neighborhood's longtime residents, the young Obama, who had already experienced differences in class and religion in his short stay in Indonesia, was exposed to another aspect of Jakarta's diversity.According to NDTV:"His nanny was an openly gay man who, in keeping with Indonesia's relaxed attitudes toward homosexuality, carried on an affair with a local butcher, longtime residents said. The nanny later joined a group of transvestites called Fantastic Dolls, who, like the many transvestites who remain fixtures of Jakarta's streetscape, entertained people by dancing and playing volleyball."Read the full story here.

  • Faith groups divided over proposed New York Islamic center. It's a Mosque Rauf said so himself in Kazakstan a 2 weeks ago!American Christians, Muslims and those of other faiths are divided over what to do about a proposed Islamic community center near ground zero in New York, a new poll shows. While some six in 10 Catholics and Mormons think another location should be found, less than a third of Muslims, other non-Christians and non-religious Americans feel the same way, according to the Gallup survey. Jewish Americans, Protestants and other Christians fell more in the middle. No majority exists in any of the groups for building the center on the proposed location.About 40 percent of Muslims, other non-Christians and non-religious Americans support the idea, while the numbers drop to 25 percent or less for Catholics, Mormons, Jewish Americans, Protestants and other Christians. The third option was to build at the same location near ground zero, but make the facility an interfaith center. No more than 30 percent of any faith group backed the option.Hmmm.....I would say Non Muslim religions are not devided but united.Read the full story here.

  • HT:Matzav.NYC’s Newest Anti-Terror Deterrent: ‘Vapor Wake Dogs’.After spending billions on bomb-detection equipment, the Pentagon now says the best tool for the job is … a dog. And now a new generation of cunning canine will soon be sniffing for explosives on city streets. They’re called “vapor wake dogs” and CBS 2’s Tony Aiello recently put their amazing abilities to the test.On a crowded street in lower Manhattan, Aiello tried to keep an explosive secret to find out if a dog can sniff out the danger. So in the test, Aiello stayed across the street from the dog, keeping his distance because he was going to be a decoy during a test of the canine’s abilities. Aiello put on the black powder belt and a sport coat and glasses just to change his appearance a little bit. He even carried a jacket to try to hide the bulk of the belt.Raven followed her nose right towards Aiello, picked him out of the crowd and then strained at her leash as she followed him across the street. They are a four-legged anti-terror tool, sniffing out trouble. After last week’s package bomb scare vapor wake dogs are being looked at for cargo screening. The NYPD won’t say how many dogs it has acquired.Read the full story here.

  • Punjab: Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy. For the first time, a woman is sentenced to death in Pakistan for this kind of “offence”. The blasphemy law was introduced in 1986 by then Pakistani dictator Zia-ul Haq and since then it has become a tool for discrimination and violence. Part of the Pakistan Penal Code, the law imposes life in prison for defiling the Qur’an and death for insulting Muhammad.Pakistan has “crossed a line” in sentencing a Christian woman to death for blasphemy. Asia Bibi, a 37-year-old farm worker mother of two, was convicted of committing blasphemy before her fellow workers during a heated discussion about religion in the village of Ittanwali in June last year. Some of the women workers had reportedly been pressuring Bibi to renounce her Christian faith and accept Islam. During one discussion, Bibi responded by speaking of how Jesus had died on the cross for the sins of humanity and asking the Muslim women what Muhammad had done for them. The Muslim women took offence and began beating Bibi. Afterwards she was locked in a room. According to Release International, a mob reportedly formed and “violently abused” her and her children.Hmm...Religion of Peace.Read the full scandal story here.

  • Landmark ruling in Turkey Buyukada orphanage returned to the Orthodox Patriarchate. After the ruling of the European Court, Turkey decides to return, the building located on the Island of the Princes to the Fanar. The decision paves the way for the requests relating to other religious buildings, monasteries, for the most part, seized by the state. The court has informed the "Fanar" that orders have been given for the final return of the building, located on the 'Island of the Princes’ to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. It also ordered that the land be registered to the “Rum Patrikanesi” (The Patriarchate of the Rum, as Orthodox Christians are called in Turkey), recognizing its de facto legal status. The "Fanar", having unsuccessfully exhausted all legal means at its disposal with the Turkish authorities, appealed to the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, which on 15 June this year, accepted its case. However, one last step remains: that is, removing the status of "mazbut" from the orphanage, to arrange for its release from seizure and occupation by the General Directorate of Foundations and hand over management to administrators appointed by the Christian Orthodox community in Istanbul.Hmmm....the things you have to allow to get in the EU?Read the full story here.

  • Taliban Tries New Afghanistan War Tactic, Pens 'Open Letter' to Congress. In a rambling "open letter" to Congress, the Taliban's spokesman said he wanted to present American lawmakers with "a true picture of the ground realities" of the war in Afghanistan, which he insisted the U.S. can't win.The spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yousaf Ahmadi, called on Congress to send a fact-finding mission to Afghanistan, apparently ignorant of the fact that representatives and senators visit Afghanistan all the time. But American lawmakers rarely leave heavily guarded U.S. facilities, moving only in armored convoys, because of the danger presented by the Taliban. The letter was e-mailed to news organizations Sunday, and it differed little from the countless statements the Taliban have released over the years. Many have been aimed at Americans, at times directly saying so.Much of the roughly 2,300-word letter, addressed to "Messers American Congressmen" and written in similarly problematic English, is stock rhetoric. It wasn't clear whether the letter was actually sent to members of Congress or simply e-mailed to news organizations.Read the full story here.

  • HT:AlwaysOnWatch.Obama Sees Advantages In The Decline Of America As An Economic Power. From the Times of India:...The fact of the matter is that for most of my lifetime and I'll turn 50 next year - the US was such an enormously dominant economic power, we were such a large market, our industry, our technology, our manufacturing was so significant that we always met the rest of the world economically on our terms. And now because of the incredible rise of India and China and Brazil and other countries, the US remains the largest economy and the largest market, but there is real competition.""This will keep America on its toes. America is going to have to compete. There is going to be a tug-of-war within the US between those who see globalisation as a threat and those who accept we live in a open integrated world, which has challenges and opportunities."...Going by media reports in the US of his first day in India, his focus on jobs and investments was well received.Competition is fine. But just how is competition within the present globalization framework going to help the U.S. economy to recover and bring jobs here to the States? And how is the competitive field going to be level if more and more jobs which should be based here in the United States are outsourced to nations that pay workers $1 a day?Watch the video at the beginning of this post. • Some Dems and White House Staffers Want Obama Removed from Office.According to investigative journalist Wayne Madsen, some Democrats and White House staffers are considering removing Barack Obama from office via Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution: Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.Opinion Maker: "Top Democrats are still reeling from Obama's bizarre behavior at a $7500-a-plate fundraiser at a stately mansion at Brown University in Rhode Island on October 25." The President left the fundraiser after only 20 minutes and without warning, explaining that he had to go home to "tuck in the girls, walk the dog, and scoop the poop.""Some staffers have said [concerning the President's bizarre behavior] on deep background that the revelations by the ex-White House official (referred to in this story) to [blogger] "Ulsterman" [Who some staffers have been meeting with] are not even half of the story about what is actually occurring in the White House. This story also reports that Obama has been prescribed anti-anxiety medication.Hmmm....no more walking on water, but water treading?Read the full story here.

  • International committee vows to restore Mount of Olives.Distinguished panel confronts grave desecrations, violence and security deterioration plaguing ancient Jerusalem burial ground. The Committee unveiled a list of urgent action demands spelling out key changes on the ground to ensure the safety and sanctity of the famous Jewish cemetery. In front of an audience of close to 1,000 people, Knesset Member Danny Danon (Likud), community leader Adv. David Martin and moderator Ruthie Blum Leibowitz explored the current state of the cemetery and its significance in Jewish history as well as what is needed to rehabilitate the site.MK Danon told those on hand, “At present, there is a need to call ahead for a security escort prior to visiting Har Hazeitim to ensure the safety of visitors to the site. This is not acceptable in Israel in 2010.The Mount of Olives has been used as a Jewish cemetery for over 3,000 years and is comprised of approximately 150,000 graves. • Islam Channel breaks British broadcast rules, regulator says. Britain's Islam Channel broke broadcasting regulations by condoning marital rape, encouraging violence against women, and promoting an anti-Israel, pro-Hamas line, the country's broadcast regulator Ofcom ruled Monday. One violation came during an advice program in which a female caller asked if a woman could hit her husband back if he was beating her. The host, as part of his answer, said the most a husband could do was hit her with a stick the size of a pen "just to make her feel that you are not happy with her."The same host said in another program that for a woman to wear perfume when praying in a mosque made her a prostitute in the eyes of the Prophet Mohammed. Another violation took place in a discussion about an Afghan law that, critics say, allows men to rape their wives. The Islam Channel "does not condone or encourage violence toward women under any circumstances," the broadcaster told Ofcom during the investigation. But the author of a report into the channel said it promotes "a fringe and intolerant form of Islam."The channel's agenda "risks having a negative effect not only on British Muslim communities but also on relations between Muslims and non-Muslims," he said.Read the full story here.More here.

  • Until 1996, nobody called Rachel’s Tomb a mosque. Analysis: UNESCO’s recent designation flies in the face of Jewish history, Islamic tradition and Ottoman confirmation. In a series of decisions condemning Israel, the UNESCO board called upon the government to rescind its decision in February to include Rachel’s Tomb and the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron on Israel’s official list of national heritage sites. The sharp protests by Ambassador to UNESCO Nimrod Barkan to the UN body’s decision were expunged from the record by the chairman of the session, the Russian representative, on the pretext that they were too aggressive.A scrupulous examination of testimonies and historical sources demonstrates that defining Rachel’s Tomb as a mosque does an injustice to facts and traditions anchored in both Muslim documents and Jewish sources, and constitutes distortion, bias and deception. As opposed to the Temple Mount and the Cave of the Patriarchs, which also serve as the location of mosques, Rachel’s Tomb never served as a mosque for the Muslims. The Muslim connection to the site derives from its relation to Rachel and has no connection to Bilal ibn Rabah, Muhammad’s first muezzin.Note that in these photos from the early 1900's no Muslim cemetary or mosque exists near the Tomb. • President Obama isolated ahead of 2012. President Barack Obama has performed his act of contrition. Now comes the hard part, according to Democrats around the country: reckoning with the simple fact that he’s isolated himself from virtually every group that matters in American politics. Congressional Democrats consider him distant and blame him for their historic defeat on Tuesday. Democratic state party leaders scoff at what they see as an inattentive and hapless political operation. Democratic lobbyists feel maligned by his holier-than-thou take on their profession. His own Cabinet — with only a few exceptions — has been marginalized. “This guy swept to power on a wave of adulation, and he learned the wrong lessons from that,” said a Democratic official who deals frequently with the White House. “He’s more of a movement leader than a politician. He needs someone to kick his ass on things large and small and teach him to be a politician.”Hmmm....that's why he's in Asia?Read the full story here.

  • Number of the Week: $10.2 Trillion in Global Borrowing.$10.2 trillion: The amount of money advanced-nation governments will need to borrow in 2011As the debts of advanced countries rise to levels not seen since the aftermath of World War II, it’s hard to know how much is too much. But it’s easy to see that the risk of serious financial trouble is growing.Next year, fifteen major developed-country governments, including the U.S., Japan, the U.K., Spain and Greece, will have to raise some $10.2 trillion to repay maturing bonds and finance their budget deficits, according to estimates from the International Monetary Fund. That’s up 7% from this year, and equals 27% of their combined annual economic output.Aside from Japan, which has a huge debt hangover from decades of anemic growth, the U.S. is the most extreme case. Next year, the U.S. government will have to find $4.2 trillion. That’s 27.8% of its annual economic output, up from 26.5% this year. By comparison, crisis-addled Greece needs $69 billion, or 23.8% of its annual GDP.Hmmmm.....hey big spender.......we all have to tighten our belts?Read the full "succes" story here.

  • Sikhs outraged at US airport turban searches.Sikh Americans are protesting at what they say is a new policy at US airports to screen their turbans systematically, voicing fear the move would further stigmatize their faith.US officials have not confirmed a change in policy and insisted they respected religious beliefs. But they said security measures necessitated checks on "bulky" clothing such as turbans, which Sikh men are required by faith to wear.A group of Sikh American groups said they met several weeks ago with representatives of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) who told them that airports would now screen turbans with hand-wands at all times.Current policy is erratic, with New York City airports rarely conducting secondary searches on Sikhs but airports in other cities such as Chicago and San Francisco doing so routinely, said Amardeep Singh, co-founder of the Sikh Coalition advocacy group."The TSA told us, point blank, that turbans will now be screened 100 per cent of the time," Singh told AFP on Monday."To have the government at an airport pulling the turban aside specifically and screening the turban only reinforces that view that many people already have," Singh said.If they're going to stigmatize our children and stigmatize our community and specifically stigmatize our article of faith, they better have a damn good reason," he said.Hmmm...we don't want the visit your temple ,but do want to visit your turbans?Read the full story here.

  • Oklahoma's Ban on Shariah Law Blocked: Supporters Blame State Attorney General.A popular new law that bars Oklahoma courts from considering Islamic law, or Shariah, when deciding cases was put on hold Monday after a prominent Muslim in the state won a temporary restraining order in federal court.Supporters of the Oklahoma ballot initiative, which passed with 70 percent of the vote, would not comment on the impact of the ruling. But state Sen. Anthony Sykes, who co-authored the measure, charged that the judge ruled as she did because the state’s attorney general, Drew Edmondson, failed to respond to the suit. Two state legislators were quick to blast the judge's ruling and the Oklahoma attorney general, who they said did not stand up to support the new law.Oklahoma state Rep. Rex Duncan, who co-sponsored the bill, said he hadn’t seen the judge's written ruling yet, but he was disappointed that “her words from the bench indicated she had completely embraced the plaintiff’s arguments.”“They were pretty extraordinary statements from the judge,” he said.I wonder what the founding fathers would have done?Read the full story here.

  • HT:RefugeeResetlementWatch.29 Somalis indicted for sex trafficking.MINNEAPOLIS – Twenty-nine people have been indicted in a sex trafficking ring in which Somali gangs in Minneapolis and St. Paul allegedly forced girls under age 14 into prostitution in Minnesota, Tennessee and Ohio, according to an indictment unsealed Monday. The 24-count indictment, unsealed in U.S. District Court in the Middle District of Tennessee, said one of the gangs’ goals was recruiting females under age 18, including some under age 14, and forcing them into prostitution so the defendants could get money, marijuana or liquor. The indictment details several instances in which young Somali or African American girls were taken from place to place and forced to engage in sex acts with multiple people. One girl was under 13 when she was first prostituted. Another girl was 18 when she was raped by multiple men in a hotel room, the indictment said. Also, after being closed for nearly two years, the US State Department is on the verge of resuming the fraud-ridden family reunification program that admitted as many as 36,000 Somalis fraudulently to the US between 2003 and 2008. • HT:RefugeeResetlementWatch.Related : ORR(Office of Refugee Resettlement), where is the annual report to Congress? We began FY2011 on October 1st with a Presidential Determination letter to admit another 80,000 refugees this year, so by my calculation they owe Congress the report for 2008 and 2009. The importance of the annual report is that it tells members of Congress and the public what refugees were resettled and to which states. It tells us employment rates. It tells us what resettlement agencies are doing good jobs in finding employment and which aren’t. It tells us what the welfare useage is and relates that to previous years and so on.So as we continue high rates of refugee resettlement through the great recession years we have no official picture of how those refugees are doing.Write to your Congressman and US Senators and ask where the 2008 and 2009 annual reports are!Read the full story here.

Eldad will be followed by a guest speech by the Dutch nationalist Wilders, in which he will voice support for the idea of establishing a Palestinian state in Jordan. Former defense minister Moshe Arens and former GSS director Ami Ayalon were invited to the conference in order to respond to the speeches. So how 'mainstream' is the third largest party in the Dutch parliament with approximately one sixth of the seats (24 out of 150)? While procedures which allow Sikhs to pat down their turbans and have their hands swabbed by a TSA screener remain in place, what changed is that turbaned Sikhs must go through an additional hand wand of the turban as an additional screening procedure 100% of the time. This is even for Sikh travellers who choose to be screened by going through the new advanced imaging technology (AIT) machines. The AIT machines (or whole body imaging machines) are being placed in airports nationwide over the coming years.“National Sikh organisations oppose this policy and question its necessity. Targeting turbans for additional scrutiny sends a message to other passengers that Sikhs and their articles of faith are to be viewed with suspicion by fellow travellers. The policy is a serious infringement on the Sikh community’s civil rights and liberties,” it said.Hmmmm.....just now that a certain someone is leaving India?Read the full story here.

  • Israel charges imam with incitement against Pope.Israeli authorities have charged the imam of a mosque in Nazareth with inciting violence against Pope Benedict and supporting al Qaeda and "global jihad," the justice ministry said Sunday. The indictment said Nazim Mahmoud Salim, who was arrested by police a month ago, led a group of about 2,000 worshippers, and had also preached at the flashpoint al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, Islam's third holiest shrine.Salim is charged with inciting violence against Pope Benedict during his visit last year to Nazareth, the town of Jesus' boyhood in the heartland of Israel's minority Arab population. In his sermons and on his website over the past decade, the indictment said, Salim preached "an ideological world view identical to that of global jihad" and wrote "publications that supported and identified with the terror organisation al Qaeda."At the time of Pope Benedict's visit to the Holy Land in May 2009, the indictment quotes Salim as saying in a sermon at al Aqsa: "The pope prepares himself at the gate of the Vatican and at the head of a crusade against the Islamic world ... we will expel the pope from Nazareth."Salim is being held by authorities until the end of the proceedings, a Justice Ministry spokeswoman said.Read the full story here.

  • HT:IMRA.IDF decides to store Iron Dome system at air force base - not deploy it. [Puzzle: why have it?]Why do we have the Iron Dome? Option #1. To shield Israeli civilian targets from rocket attack.Option #2. To shield Israeli policy makers from the imperative of addressing the growing rocket threat from Gaza and south Lebanon. On Sunday, top IDF officers told The Jerusalem Post that the initial operational capability would be postponed until the first quarter of 2011.The delay, the officers stressed, was not due to technical malfunctions but rather to the intricate process of training IDF officers and soldiers to use the complicated weapons system.“This system is unbelievable,” one officer said. “It is, however, sometimes a complicated process to take in such a system and to turn it operational and into a fully functioning weapons system.”Read the full story here.

  • US rejects Israel's call for Iran.Robert Gates, US defence secretary, rejects Benyamin Netanyahu's call for 'credible' military threat against Iran. The US has rejected comments by Israel's prime minister calling for a military threat against Iran to ensure it does not obtain nuclear weapons."We know that they are concerned about the impact of the sanctions. The sanctions are biting more deeply than they anticipated and we are working very hard at this," Robert Gates, US defence secretary, said on Monday."So I would disagree that only a credible military threat can get Iran to take the actions it needs to end its nuclear weapons programme," he said during a visit to Australia for security talks."We are prepared to do what is necessary but at this point we continue to believe that the political-economic approach that we taking is in fact having an impact in Iran."In remarks to the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly in New Orleans, Biden said: "We continue to seek a peaceful resolution and hope Iranian leaders will reconsider their current destructive and debilitating course"."But let me be very clear about this: We are also absolutely committed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons."The West believes that Iran aims to use its uranium enrichment programme to build atomic weapons, and both Israel and the United States have said all options are on the table in dealing with its nuclear ambitions. The New York Times reported last month that the Obama administration and its European allies were preparing a new, more onerous offer for Iran than the one rejected by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei last year. The offer would require Iran to send more than 1,995 kgs of low-enriched uranium out of the country, an increase of more than two-thirds from the amount required under a deal struck in Vienna.Hmmm.....and who's going to intermediate this deal?.......of course the "Good" Nato member Turkey.Read the full story here.

  • HT:DanielGreenfield.Who is Really Distorting Islam? All of us recognize that this great religion (Islam), in the hands of a few extremists, has been distorted." Barack Hussein Obama"Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all!"Ayatollah Khomeini. While we now know that a young Obama rebelled against his mother and attended Koran classes, he clearly didn't attend nearly enough of them. Or the Harvard genius is back to playing dumb.According to Obama, and so much of the political establishment, the Koran is being distorted by a "few extremists" somewhere who are trying to convince the billion peaceful Muslims, that it actually promotes violence. But first a few obvious questions. How many exactly is a "few"? Are we talking about a few dozen, a few thousand, a few million? Naturally Obama and the Islam apologists never really address that question. Because it is a rather inconvenient question. Since Muslims are defined by religious streams and mosque attendance, it should be easy enough to come up with a realistic figure.Read the full story here.

  • Bank Holiday Rumors Swirl Amidst Currency Crisis. With the world on the verge of a currency war as the Federal Reserve follows through on its dollar-killing quantitative easing program, rumors are once again swirling of a “bank holiday,” during which US citizens will be prevented from withdrawing money or at least limited in the amount of the withdrawal they can make. The bank holiday is rumored to be set for next week, with Thursday November 11 pinpointed as the likeliest date.According to radio host Steve Quayle, a pastor was told by one of the managers of a prominent east coast bank that banks would close for an undetermined amount of time, and that when they reopened, “all withdrawals by checks would be limited to $500 per week – no matter what the balance in the account is.”Limiting the amount of money customers can withdraw or blocking the facility altogether reminds us of a Citigroup advisory that was sent to customers at the start of the year which stated that the bank reserved “the right to require (7) days advance notice before permitting a withdrawal from all checking accounts.” The story stoked fears that financial institutions were preparing for bank runs.On his website, Quayle asks, “When in U.S. History has a sitting President taken off on an overseas trip for an extended period of time, with 65 airplanes, 34 warships reportedly 3,000 people including his friends and cohorts, at the pinnacle of an economic and political upheaval?”Fears of a bank holiday first arose in June of last year, when it was rumored that banks would close their doors in early September. Concern was fueled by reports that US embassies in foreign countries were purchasing large quantities of local currency. With Brazil and other countries now threatening to take drastic currency measures to protect themselves against a dollar crisis, a similar financial environment is stoking identical fears.Read the full story here.

  • HT:StrategyPage.Israel Braces For The Iranian Rain Of Fire. The head of Israeli military intelligence warned his political superiors that the next major war Israel encountered would likely result in much higher Israeli casualties, especially to civilians. There is also growing concern about Russia selling advanced anti-aircraft systems to Syria, which could pass them on to Iran. All this could be traced back to preparations Iran has been making for over a decade. Using their oil wealth, and weapons smuggling network, Iran has armed Syria, Hezbollah (the Shia militia in southern Lebanon) and Hamas (the Palestinian terrorist group that runs Gaza) with over 50,000 rockets, plus numerous other weapons. Most of the rockets are short range (about 10 kilometers), but several thousand have a much longer reach, and can hit targets throughout Israel. The Iranian master plan is for Hezbollah, Hamas, Syria and Iran to simultaneously fire as many missiles and rockets into Israel as they can. Even if there are no ground forces to follow up such an attack, the casualties (civilian and military) in Israel would be seen as a great Islamic victory, and would demoralize the Israelis.Read the full story here.

  • Turkey has only itself to blame if it is shunned by the EU.The vandalism and looting of Cyprus's cultural heritage that has occurred since 1974 is unworthy of any civilised nation.Martin Kettle's claim that Turkey is "held hostage by the atavistic parochialism of a Greek Cypriot statelet of fewer than one million people and with a declining GDP of $23bn" is far from the truth.Kettle concerns himself with "the big issues" facing Europe such as its shrinking population and integration as well as energy and security. But it is frequently stated that Europe is a community of values, and on this basis the Cyprus question must be seen as a principle issue.Kettle mentions that Europe and Turkey have common interests, agreements worth making and promises to keep. However, it is precisely because Turkey has reneged on its commitment in July 2005 to extend the customs union to the Republic of Cyprus that the European Council in December 2006 decided to block the opening of eight negotiating chapters.'Turkey has declared on more than one occasion that if it has to make a choice between its accession to the EU and Cyprus, it will choose Cyprus'.This is why reunification talks are getting nowhere, however hard Dimitris Christofias, the Greek Cypriot president, tries. The new Turkish Cypriot leader, Dervis Eroglu, unlike the former leader, Mehmet Ali Talat, is simply not interested that they should go anywhere, and takes his orders directly from Ankara. As Martin Kettle writes about the prospect of Turkey's EU membership: "the failure is predictable, disgraceful and incredibly shortsighted". And it's Turkey's fault.Read the full story here.

  • Erdogan the new Saladdin for the Muslim world.Recently, the Prime Ministers of Turkey and Pakistan ‘vowed’ for joint efforts to face international and regional challenges. This is a dream that every Muslim has and nurtures. If memory serves right, the idea of Muslim unity politically was attributed to Liaquat Ali Khan, the first PM of Pakistan. Ideologically, the concept of Ummah is the basic theme in the Holy Quran, but we pay only lip service to the idea. [Few] Muslim leaders [have] tried to put the idea into practical shape. Bhutto had convened a Muslim Summit at Lahore and hopes were kindled that the Ummah may become united politically. But alas! Hopes and dreams of Muslim unity were shattered; the dream of a Muslim ‘Block’ vanished with the assassination of Liaquat Ali and hopes of Muslim unity died with the hanging of Bhutto. So, the ‘vow’ made by the PMs of Turkey and Pakistan have rekindled the old hopes. If they are able to move in this direction even one step, Muslims will move one step closer to that ideal. The modern political philosophers have divided the world in eastern and western civilisations and call the ongoing conflict a ‘clash of civilisations’; in fact it is the clash of ideologies. Now, the clash has reached to its zenith. The clash between the West and the East had started on November 25, 1095CE, when Pope Urban II rallied the First Crusade against the Muslims at the Council of Clermont. English author Karen Armstrong calls it “a crucial and formative event for the western Europe”, whose repercussions are felt even today. The mounting of crusades was the physical manifestation of ideological clash. The observation of Ms Armstrong hits one in the face, when one recalls the initial speech of Bush Jr after USA’s attack on Iraq – he had described the attack as the beginning of a new crusade. So, what should Muslims do to face this challenge? It is a collective challenge and needs a collective response. The road to the solution of all Muslim problems is long and arduous. It demands sacrifices at personal, national and community levels. The Muslims have not realised their power potential or are too meek to demonstrate it. Muslim countries sit over watching the Strait of Jabal-ut-Tariq in the West to the Melaka Straits in the East. They dominate the central region of the ‘old’ world and are contiguous. With Central Asian Muslim Republics, they have more than 75 percent of world energy sources and dominate all trade outlets and inlets. With such potential with them, they have the wherewithal to make themselves heard in the world. Three countries – Turkey, Iran and Pakistan – are so located that they dominate ‘West, Centre and East’ of the region and can play a significant role to unite this region with an international Muslim body, as their United Muslim Organisation promoting peace, trade and development in the region. This will pave way for Muslim nations United Nations making the existing UNO a redundant body for the Muslims. We cannot live honourably in the world by defying Allah’s commandment in Al-Quran V-51. Sooner or later the Muslims will have to embark on this road to glory and be ready to make the sacrifices; the sooner we unite under collective Muslim banner the better. • For Afghan wives, a desperate, fiery way out.Even the poorest families in Afghanistan have matches and cooking fuel. The combination usually sustains life. But it also can be the makings of a horrifying escape: from poverty, from forced marriages, from the abuse and despondency that can be the fate of Afghan women. The night before she burned herself, Gul Zada took her children to her sister's for a family party. All seemed well. Later it emerged that she had not brought a present, and a relative had chided her for it, said her son Juma Gul.This small thing apparently broke her. Ms. Zada, who was 45, the mother of six children and who earned pitiably little cleaning houses, ended up with burns on nearly 60 percent of her body at the Herat burn hospital."If you run away from home, you may be raped or put in jail and then sent home and then what will happen to you?" asked Rachel Reid, a researcher for Human Rights Watch who tracks violence against women.Returned runaways are often shot or stabbed in honor killings because the families fear they have spent time unchaperoned with a man. Women and girls are still stoned to death. Those who burn themselves but survive are often relegated to grinding Cinderella existences while their husbands marry other, untainted women."Violence in the lives of Afghanistan's women comes from everywhere: from her father or brother, from her husband, from her father-in-law, from her mother-in-law and sister-in-law,"Two weeks after his mother set herself on fire, he stood by her bed as she stopped breathing.Read the full human tragedy here.

He was declared bankrupt shortly before he was sentenced to life for the rapes, and for the negligent homicide of one of the seven children Elisabeth gave birth to in the darkness. But Fritzl pursued the building scheme through his insolvency solicitor Dr Walter Anzboeck.Permission was received on Thursday, much to the distress of locals who fear any such project will inevitably be known as ‘Fritzl Towers.’Read the full scandal story here.

  • HT:BacktoBasics.Human rights groups press Obama on child soldiers decision.Twenty-nine leading human rights organizations wrote to President Obama on Friday to express their disappointment with his decision last week to waive sanctions against four countries the State Department has identified as using child soldiers. The human rights and child advocacy community was not consulted before the White House announced its decision on Oct. 25 to waive penalties under the Child Soldiers Prevention Act of 2008, which was supposed to go into effect last month, for violators Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Yemen. The NGO leaders, along with officials on Capitol Hill, also expressed their unhappiness about the announcement, and their exclusion from the decision making process, in an Oct. 29 conference call with senior administration officials. Today, they backed up their complaints in writing and called on the administration to mitigate the consequences.“We believe that your waiver undermines the intent of the law and sends an unfortunate message that the administration is not seriously committed to ending the use of child soldiers,” the groups wrote to Obama. “By giving a blanket waiver, the administration has also given up the significant leverage that the law provides to influence the child recruitment practices of its military allies.”Read the full story here.

  • Barack Obama joined Muslim prayers at school, teacher says.AS a schoolboy in Jakarta, Barack Obama attended Muslim prayer sessions with his classmates against the wishes of his mother. The US President's former grade three teacher said that Mr Obama - who was known as "Barry" when he attended the Menteng One school in Jakarta - studied the Koran and went to classes on Islam, despite the objections of Anne Dunham, a Roman Catholic.Mr Obama attended classes on Islam while the Christians attended classes on Christianity, said Effendi. Barry, he said, was alone among the pupils in that he insisted on attending both."His mother did not like him learning Islam, although his father was a Muslim. Sometimes she came to the school; she was angry with the religious teacher and said 'Why did you teach him the Koran?'" said Effendi. The US President - who has cancelled a scheduled trip to Indonesia twice before - may be stymied again by air traffic disruption caused by an ash cloud emitted from Mount Merapi. The volcano has been erupting since October 26, killing at least 117 people.Mr Obama is due to arrive in Jakarta tomorrow after three days in India.A third cancellation would not be welcomed in Indonesia, where some offence has already been taken at the brevity of the visit.Read the full story here.

  • Outrage as cellar monster Fritzl wins permission to build houses while behind bars.Josef Fritzl has won planning permission for a major building project from his prison cell. The 75-year-old Austrian, who kept his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and repeatedly raped her, wants to build 13 townhouses, an office building and a subterranean garage in his home town of Amstetten. He had built an impressive property portfolio before his daughter Elisabeth escaped after giving birth to seven children by him.The proposed development is only 500 yards from the family home where he built a dungeon to imprison Elisabeth in 1984 when she was 18.Fritzl applied for the planning permission in 2006 – two years before his secret family was discovered.

Ofsted and the Charity Commission are today accused of "whitewashing" hardline Islamic schools which are helping to radicalise a new generation of young British Muslims. An investigation by The Sunday Telegraph has established that the education watchdog has published positive reports praising Muslim schools for their contribution to community cohesion — even in the case of a school which openly states that Muslims “oppose the lifestyle of the West”. The Ofsted inspector responsible for many of the reports, Michele Messaoudi, has been accused of having links to radical Islamist organisations. This newspaper can reveal that another recent Ofsted inspector, Akram Khan-Cheema, is the chief executive of a radical Muslim educational foundation, IBERR.Its website describes Islamic schools as “one of the most important factors which protect Muslim children from the onslaught of Euro-centrism, homosexuality, racism, and secular traditions”.Ms Stuart, of the Centre for Social Cohesion, said: “A whole generation is being brought up to at the very least suspect, and perhaps even despise, the society they will have to live in. • HT:AmericanThinker. The Dialectic of Obama.America's left, and the party it dominates, faced a reckoning yesterday. Two short years ago, exultant progressives believed America had shifted permanently to the left. Now that sweet taste of victory has turned to acrid ashes in their mouths. The scores of congressional Democrats (along with even more state officeholders) who lost their coveted positions, need a way of comprehending the disaster which has befallen them. The scapegoats offered by President Obama and his surrogates -- Tea Partiers, witches, foreign money, and Fox News -- will not suffice. President Obama himself, the man with a winning smile, a slender build, and a way with teleprompters, cannot escape blame for the disaster at the polls. Former friends, including many who rode his coattails, see in him the cause of their expulsion from the political paradise of high elective office. It was not just Fox News, of course. Enterprising internet sites, talk radio, and the few conservative newspapers dug up all manner of information which broke the spell. Worst of all, social media (like Mybarackobama.com) turned out to be a model just as well-adapted to conservatives as to leftists. The real killer, when it came to the social forces, was the intersection of self-reliance, information, and social media. The Tea Party phenomenon, a self-organizing, spontaneous rebellion aimed at overthrowing the brand-new progressive dominance of government, was fatally misunderstood by just about everyone on the left. But the coup de grâce, the one thing nobody on the left had counted on, was that flawed document, the United States Constitution. Tea Partiers began reading the Tenth Amendment and asking awkward questions about the power the central state was arrogating. Thus, the Tea Party antithesis to the Obama thesis has turned out to be larger, more powerful, and more deeply rooted than anticipated. The result -- the synthesis -- began to unfold yesterday, and it will continue to manifest through the next few elections. The dialectic of Obama is turning out to be a force returning America to its constitutional moorings.Read the full story here.

  • Texas Considers Medicaid Withdrawal. Some Republican lawmakers — still reveling in Tuesday’s statewide election sweep — are proposing an unprecedented solution to the state’s estimated $25 billion budget shortfall: dropping out of the federal Medicaid program.Far-right conservatives are offering that possibility in impassioned news conferences. Moderate Republicans are studying it behind closed doors. And the party’s advisers on health care policy say it is being discussed more seriously than ever, though they admit it may be as much a huge in-your-face to Washington as anything else. “With Obamacare mandates coming down, we have a situation where we cannot reduce benefits or change eligibility” to cut costs, said State Representative Warren Chisum, Republican of Pampa, the veteran conservative lawmaker who recently entered the race for speaker of the House. “This system is bankrupting our state,” he said. “We need to get out of it. And with the budget shortfall we’re anticipating, we may have to act this year.” Read the full story here.

  • HT:Bloggerbase.Conservatives have questioned for some time now the strange love affair between the Left and Islam. These two make very strange bedfellows indeed considering the enormity of the gap that exists between them ideologically. Some similarities can be found between the two, but frankly, there are similarities between all ideologies at some level. No, this relationship is more basic, more tactical in nature- the enemy of my enemy is my friend.Sounds a bit crusadish, but yes, this is as much a component of the fight as anything. The Left eagerly embraces anything challenging Christianity they can. This is no more evident than any American inner city where the Left has focused on destroying the family unit and individual accountability. If we are to stand any chance of defeating Islamic terror, we have to come to the realization that the Left is a willing and witting accomplice.Read the full story here.

  • HT:DanielGreenfield.God as Government.God as government or government as god, is what takes place when you surgically slice away the “god” part of religion. Once you postulate that all religions are essentially the same, that they all worship the same god, and that the only differences between them are matters of ritual, then you have eliminated the differences and the identities of all religions. If there are no unique revelations, no special scriptures and no vital testaments… then each religion’s identity becomes a formality, is reduced to a series of dubious traditions that don’t really matter in the bigger picture. If all religions are equally valid, then they are also equally invalid. Just as, if all opinions are valid, then they are also equally invalid. The religion of government justifies itself through the impossible messianic vision of equality, a state that cannot be achieved, but whose attainment provides an unlimited license for government to intervene in all human affairs. By turning government into the arbiter of equality, it gains an impossible mission and an unlimited scope of powers. A combination that historically has bred more nightmares than anything else.Leader worship serves as a cover for tyranny, but more importantly as a cover for failure.Government as god is always looking forward, to a new deal, a new frontier or a great society, some vast project of social justice always out there, a faint vision of a Communist future that is always hovering over the next horizon like a mirage in the desert. A future always out of reach because human greed is in the way. And since underneath it itself is also built on human greed, like the worst of fanatics, socialism maddeningly chases its own tail. And sooner or later it always turns on the people it claims to want to help, unless they turn on it first.Read the full story here.

  • Dogs: Iran's new symbol of rebellion. The religiously informed state disapproval of dogs has seen the pampered pooch become the latest sign of middle-class dissent.Recently a visitor from Iran assured me that her dog was staying at a five-star spa in Tehran for the duration of her trip. I had no idea she had a dog in the first place, but was struck that she had insisted in telling me such a thing. Over the past few years, dog ownership has become yet another unlikely arena for the social and political dispute within the tumultuous politics of Iran.It is well known that dogs, along with pigs, are considered unclean in Islam. Strictly speaking, the theology doesn't ban their ownership, or petting; the Sunna prescribes that dogs are "pollutants", contact with them rendering believers ritually unclean. This means that ritual cleansing is required before one is able to perform prayers. Despite this, dogs have been kept by Muslims for centuries. For example, salukis, an ancient breed of hunting dog, have historically been valued by the Bedouin, who breed them for both their beauty and their prowess in hunting. The industry booms further every time a firebrand preacher calls for their banning or admonishes dog owners from such platforms like the much loathed national radio and TV. Its been a long time coming, but Iranian dogs are having their day."A dog a day keeps the Mullahs away?"Read the full story here.

  • Laptops can affect sex drive, sperm quality.Personal computers can crank up the temperature around the scrotal area, adversely affecting male reproductive health, says a new study.Whoever invented the 'laptop' probably didn't worry too much about male reproductive health.Turns out, unsurprisingly, that sitting with a computer on your lap will crank up the temperature of your nether regions, which could affect sperm quality. And there is little you can do about it, according to the authors of a study out today in the journal Fertility and Sterility, short of putting your laptop on a desk. The researchers hooked thermometers to the scrotums of 29 young men who were balancing a laptop on their knees. They found that even with a lap pad under the computer, the men's scrotums overheated quickly."Millions and millions of men are using laptops now, especially those in the reproductive age range," said Dr. Yefim Sheynkin, a urologist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, who led the new study."Within 10 or 15 minutes their scrotal temperature is already above what we consider safe, but they don't feel it," he added.Read the full story here.

  • World's tallest Jesus statue finally assembled in Poland.Final elements were installed on the world's tallest statue of Jesus Christ on Saturday, marking an end to the five-year construction in a small Polish town, the PAP news agency reported. The statue's torso, head and crown were installed on Saturday. The works were initially scheduled for Friday, but were delayed by strong winds.A similar attempt failed two weeks ago as the 400-ton crane on site proved inadequate to lift the head and arms into position, and a 700-ton crane was brought in to complete the construction. The town of Swiebodzin, which is off the beaten track near the German border, hopes its gigantic Jesus will become a tourist attraction as famous as the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. The monument is expected to overshadow not only Christ the Redeemer, which stands at 39.6 meters (130 feet), but also the Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, which rises to 40.44 meters (almost 133 feet). The Polish statue itself is about 33 meters tall (108 feet), but its overall height, including the 16-meter (52.5 feet) mound and a two-meter (6.6 feet) crown, exceeds 51 meters (167 feet). Its total weight is about 440 metric tons. The date of the official ceremony to unveil the monument is yet to be announced, but earlier media reports said it would take place on November 21.Construction costs are estimated at almost $1.5 million, and the whole sum was raised through private donations.Source.
