And when I say Republican gains are massive, I mean tsunami.No, the GOP did not take the Senate and some races are still outstanding, but the Senate GOP has moved to the right. More so, the Republicans picking up, in the worst case, seven seats is historically strong.But consider that as you wake up this morning the Republican Party has picked up more seats in the House of Representatives than at any time since 1948 — that is more than sixty seats. Ike Skelton, Class of 1976, is gone. Many, many other Democrats are gone.That, in and of itself, is significant. But that’s not the half of it. The real story is the underreported story of the night — the Republican pick ups at the state level.There will be 18 states subject to reapportionment. The Republicans will control a majority of those — at least ten and maybe a dozen or more.   • YouTube Drops Radical Cleric Awlaki's Videos.Popular video-sharing site YouTube has removed videos featuring calls to holy war by an Al Qaeda-linked Muslim cleric after pressure from British and U.S. officials.YouTube spokeswoman Victoria Grand said the videos by Anwar al-Awlaki violated the site's guidelines prohibiting "incitement to commit violent acts," The New York Times reported Wednesday.   • Sakineh’s execution may be imminent, sets off alarm bells.The International Committee Against Stoning announces that Iranian authorities have authorised the execution of the woman accused of adultery and of murdering her husband. Two Italian ministers appeal to Tehran for clemency.The International Committee Against Stoning announced that Iranian authorities have given the green light for Sakineh Ashtiani’s execution, tomorrow. In a press release, “the ‘Human Rights Commission’ of the regime has announced that: ‘according to the existing evidence, her guilt has been confirmed.” For the committee, the regime “ created a new scenario in order to expedite her execution.” It noted that “the case file regarding the murder case of Ms Ashtiani’s husband” was “seized from her lawyer’s office [. . .] and found missing from the prosecutor’s Oskoo branch office”. Thus, Ms Ashtiani’s case was likely based on “trumped up murder charges.”Significantly, for the first time since 11 October, a news agency close to the Iranian regime has reported the arrest of Ms Ashtiani’s son, Sajjad Ghaderzadeh, and her lawyer, Houtan Kian.   • Former Iranian Revolutionary Guard: Iran Will Bomb Israel.Speaking from an undisclosed location, with his voice digitally altered to protect his true identity, former Iranian Revolutionary Guard Reza Kahlili told Israel National Radio's Yishai Fleisher that Iran would not hesitate to use nuclear bombs against Israel."[Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government] will use the nuclear bomb against Israel, they will use it against Persian Gulf countries, and they will use it against Europe to bring about that last hadith (Islamic commentaries on sayings and activities of Mohammed and his companions) that calls for total chaos, lawlessness, and havoc in the world, which creates the circumstance for Imam Mahdi (the Islamic messianic figure) to appear." Kahlili also noted that despite Ahmadinejad's fierce anti-Semitism and personal desire to eradicate Israel, the average Iranian does not hate Jews. "Before the Revolution, we had many Iranians who were Jews, and there were many marriages between Muslims and Jews. The Iranians do not look at Jews, the Iranians do not look at Israelis the same way as the Iranian government." Kahlili said. Gen. Amos Yadlin's statement coincides with previous assessments from both the CIA and the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog.But any Israeli commentary on Tehran's nuclear program is significant because Israel has not ruled out a military strike to try to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.Israel, like the West, does not believe Tehran's claims that it is developing nuclear technology to produce energy.Yadlin spoke to parliament's foreign affairs and defense committee Tuesday. We have had no response and now you are all involved in the war on Islam , so be careful of the souls of your followers. " The so-called 'War Department' of the 'Islamic State of Iraq' (ISI) al-Qaeda in Iraq issued a statement on the Web to announce that the passing of the deadline of its "ultimatum" to the Egyptian Coptic Church to release two Egyptian women, Camilia Cheh and Wafa Constantine, wives of Coptic priests, whom according to the terrorists are detained against their will in a convent after converting to Islam.Al-Qaeda, however, confirms that all Christians and their churches have become "legitimate targets" of the terrorist group and are therefore are in danger. The indictment of Islamophobia is that it is somehow an irrational or unreasoning fear. But if a group is actively trying to kill you, then how can fear of it possibly be unreasonable?The New York Times has published a piece by Robert Wright claiming that Islamophobia and Homophobia have a lot in common. The most obvious thing they have in common, is that Muslims don’t like gay people either. Or women. Or Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Zoroastrians, Hindus, atheists… and well let’s face it, pretty much everyone else. Muslims are still killing each other over religion, at a time when members of other religions settle their differences with sternly worded editorials.The recent synod to address the decline of Christianity in the Middle East took place in a strange vacuum, like a conference to discuss the reason why there’s no more space in the living room and the couch has been crushed– without ever mentioning the elephant in the room. The elephant in the Middle East is Islam. But no one dares mention it. Or draw cartoons of it. Instead the synod concluded that the blame rested somewhere between Israel and economics. Turkey's telecommunications authority will again block access to YouTube unless the video-sharing site removes a sex video of a former opposition party leader, the state-run news agency reported Tuesday.Turkey began blocking access to websites in 2007, after parliament adopted a law against cyber crime in an effort to curb child porn, prevent the dissemination of terrorist propaganda and stamp out illegal gambling. More than 6,000 sites have been banned in Turkey according to Engelli Web, a site that monitors blocked pages.   • In Unusual Move, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Slam Ahmadinejad Over Comments.In an unprecedented move, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has directly blasted President Mahmud Ahmadinejad over controversial comments he made recently, including saying that parliament is not on top of the country's affairs. Ahmadinejad was also criticized for promoting an "Iranian school of thought" instead of an Islamic one. Ahmadinejad has in recent weeks come under fire by his hard-line allies and conservatives over his new nationalistic rhetoric. So far, the IRGC, whose power and influence has grown since Ahmadinejad came to power, had not publicly criticized the Iranian president.The unusual attack by the IRGC, coming in one of its main publications, is seen by analysts as a warning issued to Ahmadinejad from Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the intention of trying to tame the Iranian president.In Germany, researcher Reza Khaligh, who has written extensively about the IRGC, says Khamenei is concerned about Ahmadinejad's growing power. "Ahmadinejad has the country's government and budget under control, through which he has appealed to the lower segments of the society. Recently, by promoting an Iranian Islam and an Iranian school of thought, he's been trying to get the backing of the middle class," says Khaligh.He added that it appears Ahmadinejad is turning into “a real power” within the structure, a power opposing the supreme leader. “That is not acceptable to Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guards," Khaligh says. Khaligh says Khamenei has been publicly supporting Ahmadinejad, but behind the scenes he's been trying to counter the "unruly" president and weaken his position.The criticism by the Revolutionary Guards, Khaligh believes, could make Ahmadinejad retreat in the short run. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already here for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments."Except for personnel providing immediate security to the President, the US officials may not be allowed to carry weapons.   • Pakistan Ahmadi man forcibly exhumed in Lahore.Police in Pakistan have forced a family of the Ahmadi sect to exhume the body of a relative because it was buried in a Muslim graveyard.Officials in the Sargodha district of Punjab province say they took the unusual move after anti-Ahmadi Muslim groups threatened peace in the area.Ahmadis consider themselves Muslims but a 1984 law barred them from identifying themselves as followers of the faith.The law also put restrictions on their religious practices.Mr Islam said that he was not concerned about the moral aspect of the exhumation of Mr Waraich's body - his job was to enforce the law.Ahmadis in Pakistan are often mobbed and lynched by extremist elements who critics say are encouraged by favourable laws.The Ahmadi spokesman, Salimuddin, said it was the 30th incident since 1984 in which an Ahmadi body has been forcefully exhumed by the administration to satisfy the opponents of the community."The administration always sides with our opponents, and has a convenient argument that they are trying to maintain peace," he said.The Ahmadi are a peacefull branch of Islam,they do not believe in violant Jihad.Read the full story here .Click here for comments.

  • 80-year-old man marries 14-year-old.A Saudi old man aged above 80 years has married a 14-year-old girl and is refusing to divorce her unless she pays him back his wedding money, the Saudi Ajel Arabic language online paper reported on Wednesday.The bride’s father, Showan Ateen, said his daughter had been forced to marry that man from the southwestern town of Sabya but that she has not moved in with him yet.   • 10-year-old girl gives birth in Spain.A 10-year-old Romanian girl has given birth in Spain, according to news accounts. The father is also a minor. Authorities don't consider it a case of rape, and officials are deciding whether the girl and her family can keep the child.The baby, born last week in the southern city of Jerez de la Frontera, weighed 6 pounds, 4 ounces. Micaela Navarro, the Andalusia region's social affairs minister, said mother and child, whose gender was not revealed, are doing fine.An official with the Spanish Justice Ministry in Madrid told the Associated Press that, under Spanish law, having consensual sex with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse. Will the real Obama show up !President plans to trade Israel's support for Palestine's .Earlier this year, President Obama drove U.S.-Israeli relations - to use one of President Obama's oft-employed analogies - into a ditch. Arguably, ties between the two countries were never more strained than last spring when Mr. Obama serially insulted the elected leader of Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, vilified his country and tried to euchre it into making territorial, political and other ill-advised concessions to Arabs determined as ever to destroy the Jewish state. Unfortunately, what the president has in mind for Israel after the election next week will make his previous treatment of the Jewish state look like the good old days.To be sure, ties between the United States and Israel - far and away America's most important and loyal friend in the Middle East - have improved lately from the nadir to which Mr. Obama plunged them since he took office. That has nothing to do, however, with a change of heart or agenda on the part of the president and his administration.Rather, it is a reflection of a cynical calculation forced upon the Obama White House by its panicked congressional allies. Already laboring under the backbreaking burden of their association with a president and his agenda that have become huge liabilities, Democrats on Capitol Hill faced wholesale defections of their Jewish constituents and funders if their party's leader persisted in his assault on Israel. Public letters and private conversations had the desired effect: Mr. Obama began treating his Israeli counterpart with a modicum of respect and the optics of a restarted peace process - however short-lived or doomed - helped conjure up an image of a renewed partnership between the two nations.Make no mistake about it, though: Once the 2010 elections are behind him, it is a safe bet that Mr. Obama will revert to form by once again exhibiting an unmistakable and ruthless determination to bend Israel to his will.Read the full story here.Click here for comments.

  • My brother and the deadly lure of al-Shabab jihad.Among Britain's Somali community there are alarming rumours about the number of young men heading to Somalia to fight with the Islamist militia al-Shabab. But when we asked to meet someone who has gone or knows someone who has gone, we were met with blank faces. Then, in a draughty community hall in north London, we were introduced to a young woman - we will call her Amina - with a story to tell. Amina is Somali-born but international in her outlook. A student in London, she works part time in a fashionable clothes shop and likes to travel the world. She says her younger brother was much the same, a true Brit who liked his friends and football. But there is a lot about her brother that she does not know. Last year after graduating from university, the 21-year-old announced he was going to Egypt with his best friend to study religion. From there, he phoned home and sounded happy but after a few months, his tone changed. "It seemed someone was there with him and every time he tried to say something, they would cut the phone off," she said.Later, she learned he was in Somalia with al-Shabab, and six weeks ago, she spoke to him for the last time. He said "make sure mum's OK. I'll find a way to be back". A few days later, his friend rang with news that her brother had been killed by a missile. He even took classes at Broward College for several years, where he studied chemistry in the late 1990s and never graduated.Several weeks ago, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula released the second issue of its English-language magazine called Inspire. The 74-page edition featured an article entitled “I Am Proud To Be a Traitor to America”, written by a 24 year-old former resident of North Carolina and New York City named Samir Khan. Two other scourges of modern times have seen their power greatly diminished if not eliminated. Fascism was crushed in World War II, and Communism lost its political base in 1991. These movements still have their adherents, but their sustaining polities went down to defeat. Yet anti-Semitism, which figured prominently in both, has metastasized and, according to one of its foremost historians, Robert Wistrich, “will probably get worse.”Many reasons—historical, religious, sociological, ideological, even epidemiological—have been adduced for the persistence of what Anthony Julius has termed the “sewer” of anti-Semitism. All have merit. But the one reason that remains but dimly understood, and even stubbornly resisted, is the political—and yet it is the one, I believe, that accounts for the phenomenon’s continuing success. And a whopping 50 people will be working round the clock in a ‘cabinet room’, briefing room and a special control room.But with all 570 rooms booked out by Obama, hotel staff will be under virtual house arrest. Worse, they can’t keep their mobile phones with them. “In case of an emergency, they can use a secured phone line, which will be under round-the-clock surveillance for obvious reasons,” a source in the hotel’s security team told the DNA newspaper.“Only 10 per cent of the staff will be present at the hotel on November 6 and 7. The rest have been given leave,” he said. A source close to the hotel’s management said that even among the 10 per cent staff, only a core team of 125 will serve the Obamas. “Security is so tight that apart from personnel directly responsible for Obama, no one, not even members of the presidential delegation, will be allowed on the president’s floor.   • 'Smiling' woman 'stabbed MP twice in stomach after confronting him about Iraq war'.A Muslim woman tried to kill a Labour MP by stabbing him in the stomach 'in revenge' for him voting for the Iraq War, a court heard today.Roshonara Choudhry, 21, is accused of knifing Stephen Timms twice in a shock attack during a constituency surgery meeting after she greeted the MP with a smile and offered him the hand of friendship.A second later the fanatic allegedly lunged forward, repeatedly plunging a three inch kitchen knife into his stomach, sending the MP 'reeling and staggering' backwards, before staff jumped in to wrestle the blade from her grasp.After the attack, she coolly told police: ''I just pushed it (the knife) in like how it is if you punch someone.'I was trying to kill him because he wanted to invade Iraq.'I was not going to stop (stabbing him) until someone made me. 'I wanted to kill him.   • Al Qaeda claims responsibility for Baghdad attacks, threats to the Copts.An Iraqi group linked to Al Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) claimed responsibility for the attack yesterday in an Eastern-rite Catholic church in Baghdad (where the faithful killed were 37, seven policemen and five terrorists) and also gave an ultimatum of 48 hours to the Coptic Church of Egypt, to free two wives of priests who (according to the terrorists) are "imprisoned in monasteries" because, they converted to Islam. This according to reports from the American centre for monitoring Islamist websites SITE. "A group of angered Mujahideen among the faithful Allah - according to a statement from the terrorist group - has carried out a raid on one of the shelters of obscene idolatry, which had always been used by Christians of Iraq as a headquarters for the fight against the religion of Islam and which supports those who fight this religion. " The Islamic State of Iraq said the attack on the church, was "to help our poor Muslim sisters prisoners in the Muslim country of Egypt." The ISI has given the Egyptian Coptic Church 48 hours to free these women "imprisoned in infidel monasteries of in idolatrous churches in Egypt."According to SITE, the Iraqi terrorists in their threat to Egyptian Copts refer to two Coptic priests' wives, who are reportedly segregated in religious structures because one has apparently converted to Islam and the other would have expressed her intention to follow suit. Unfortunately, based on his behavior in the face of a similar repudiation last January, it is safe to assume that Obama will not abandon his course.Last year, in an attempt to block Obama’s plan to nationalize healthcare, Massachusetts voters elected Republican Scott Brown to the Senate. Brown was elected because he pledged to block Obamacare in the US Senate. Rather than heed the voters’ message and abandon his plans, Obama abandoned the voters. Instead of accepting his defeat, Obama changed the rules of the game and bypassed the Senate.So it is safe to assume that for the next two years, Obama will do everything he can to bypass the Congress and govern by executive orders and regulations. Although much can be done in this fashion, Congress’s control of the purse strings will check his domestic agenda.In matters of foreign policy however, Obama will be less burdened by – but not immune – to Congressional oversight. We can therefore expect him to devote far more energy to foreign affairs in the next two years than he devoted in the last two years.This bodes ill for Israel. Since entering office, Obama has shown that his primary foreign policy goal is to remake the US’s relationship with the Muslim world. Obama has also repeatedly demonstrated that compelling Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and empowering international institutions that seek to delegitimize Israel are his preferred means of advancing this goal.The post-election Obama administration will make the lives of Israel’s leaders unpleasant.   • Afghan Women Joining Armed Forces In Greater Numbers, Challenging Convention.Khatool Muhammadzai loves martial arts, underwent commando training in pre-Taliban Afghanistan, and has logged 500 official jumps as the only female paratrooper in the country's post-Taliban military.But the middle-aged general, Afghanistan's highest-ranking woman officer, wants to be known as a peacemaker.For Muhammadzai, the question is elementary."It's everybody's duty to serve their country, to protect it," the general says. "Why shouldn't Afghan women get involved? So many women from foreign countries are in Afghanistan as a part of international coalition troops and to protect our nation."For us, Afghanistan is our own home. Why shouldn't we serve our own country?"But just because most women soldiers are not destined for combat does not mean they will be kept out of harm's way."There are a number of problems that cannot be resolved without women officers," says Jamila Mujahid, a Kabul-based journalist who covers women's issues. "For instance, searching private houses, security checks alongside roads, streets. These all are currently being performed by men, but we need women working alongside them because Afghanistan's traditions and culture simply do not allow men to check women's bodies or women's bags. Only women can do this because it preserves women's dignity. That's why it has had a good effect so far."For women, the risks can be even greater. Taliban militants frequently target female students, teachers, journalists -- basically anyone who studies outside their homes. Two major volcanic centers lie beneath the ice, the Bardarbunga volcanic centre and the Grimsvötn volcanic centre. Grimsvötn centre is the more active of the two. About every 5-10 years glacial melting causes large floods (jökulhlaup) on the sandur plain. Eruptions at Grimsvotn Volcano are phreatomagmatic.A possible eruption has begun at Grimsvotn volcano, Iceland. A flood started in Gigja in south-east Iceland. The disturbance occurred under the Vatnajokull glacier near Grimsvotn Volcano on 31st October 2010. There was an increase in flow of water by 30 cm but other rivers running from the glacier are dry. The flood may take 4-5 days to reach maximum.   • Iraq hostage drama ends in bloodshed.At least 37 people have been killed after Iraqi security forces stormed a Catholic church in central Baghdad to free dozens of hostages being held by gunmen there, security sources say.Twenty-five hostages were among the dead, along with seven members of the Iraqi security forces and at least five of the attackers.About 100 people had been inside Our Lady of Salvation for an evening Mass.One eyewitness, who was inside the church, was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying that the gunmen "came into the prayer hall and immediately killed the priest".The gunmen reportedly threw grenades and blew their suicide vests.The gunmen had reportedly demanded the release of jailed al-Qaeda militants.Read and see the full story here.And here ,more here.Click here for comments.

  • Libia : Lesbian to request asylum in France.Nessma Faraj, a Libyan girl who was arrested, raped and returned to her family which tried to force her into marriage after she announced on the internet that she is gay, has arrived in Metz travelling via Italy on a Schengen visa. France has authorised her to request asylum in the country. In fact she should have asked for asylum in Italy, the first country where she arrived. She only stayed in Italy for a few hours however, because France had decided to resolve the case using the sovereignty clause in the Dublin convention which regulates asylum requests since 1990.Nessma's request is supported by 126 associations and around twenty local people. Martyrdom and self-sacrifice were highly promoted during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, when thousands of school children were sent to the front and promised that by dying as martyrs, they would go straight to heaven.Naghdi said the Basij force want to bring the “values” of the sacred defense (a reference to the war with Iraq) to classrooms and textbooks. He said the move is part of the Basij’s measures to counter the “soft war” Iranian officials say the country’s enemies have launched to destabilize the Islamic establishment and lead to its downfall.A mother of a seven-year-old boy in Tehran, who described the efforts as “brain washing,” expressed doubt over the impact of the measures. “These things have been going on for 30 years.   • 49 Jewish gravestones smashed in France.French weekly Le Journal du Dimanche says incident took place Friday night in cemetery in northeastern town of Bar-le-Duc. Police searching for several people believed to be involved."The gate to the cemetery, which has 126 graves, is always closed," the report said. "The resident arrived at the police station and filed a report. A police force dispatched to the area found 49 smashed gravestones."According to the newspaper, "These are very heavy gravestones, which were moved, fell on the ground and broke due to their heavy weight. Yaqub Masih, a Pentecostal evangelist. The village is located in Nankana Sahib district, Punjab Province.Sources said neither Fayaz Masih nor his family had taken any loans from Ghuman, and that they had no obligations to work off any debt for Ghuman as bonded laborers.Yaqub Masih said the young man’s refusal to work in Ghuman’s fields infuriated the Muslim, who was accustomed to forcing Christians into slavery. He said Ghuman considered Masih’s refusal an act of disobedience by a “choohra,” the pejorative word for Christians in Pakistan. That they have failed has not stopped brave new entrants.The latest is Blekko, a search engine that will open to the public on Monday. Rich Skrenta, Blekko’s co-founder and chief executive, says that since Google started, the Web has been overrun by unhelpful sites full of links and keywords that push them to the top of Google’s search results but offer little relevant information. Blekko aims to show search results from only useful, trustworthy sites. “The goal is to clean up Web search and get all the spam out of it,” Mr. Skrenta said.Blekko’s search engine scours three billion Web pages that it considers worthwhile, but it shows only the top results on any given topic. It calls its edited lists of Web sites slashtags.
